I left a another thread on this forum because something was said of me that that was highly insulting, insinuating that I was not saved in the first place, and grossly false. I don't think the person meant it in that way, so that's why, as a moderator, I let it go and just removed myself from the conversation..

I think the Catholics and Protestants in that thread, including myself, are misunderstanding each other. At least I really hope that's it.

Faith and Works = There are basically two choices.

CHOICE #!. You believe that your sins are forgiven and you will reside with Jesus Christ for eternity through his shed blood for you and your faith alone in that. You submit yourself to that and he becomes your Lord, Master, and Savior. God has prepared good works for his people for AFTER they are saved. [Eph. 2] Good works - taking care of the poor, the guy who just lost his job, the woman who lost her baby, the teenager who is on the verge of suicide, the homeless, and scores more IS VITAL for the Christian. God calls us to do these things. But these things have nothing to do with our sins being forgiven. They are EVIDENCE of our sins being forgiven.
  • Example #1 = Bill Gates does a tremendous amount of good works for a TON of people. He does most of it out of the kindness of his heart. BUT, Bill Gates will tell you that he is NOT a believer. His good works count for nothing before God. He will burn in hell unless he accepts Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Bill Gates' good works - done in love or duty - will NOT save him. I cannot tell you how many times I have prayed for that man.
  • Example #2 = The thief on the cross lived a life of sin. He was a thief. For a while, [Matt. 27], he mocked Jesus along with the other thief. But something happened while he was on that cross. When it exactly happened - I can't say. But he came to believe Jesus Christ - to have FAITH in him and said so. Jesus told the thief that he would be with him [Jesus] THAT DAY in paradise. The thief NEVER committed one good work - yet he was saved.
CHOICE #2 You believe that faith in Jesus Christ is vital. You believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ saves you from your sins. As a attachment to that - you believe that good works MUST accompany that to BE saved. YOUR works, while not equal to as the saving work of Jesus Christ, what are "keeps" you saved or "makes" you saved or in some way are included in what will cause God to see you as washed clean from sin.

CHOICE #3 I suppose there could be a choice #3 as to what makes a person saved. If so, I would like to hear that option if you suppose the blood of Christ is not sufficient.

My reading comprehension is quite good. I taught students how to read and read well. When I read SOME people on that other thread, they were saying that what saves a person from hell is faith in Christ PLUS their good deeds. It was clear as a bell. Maybe I am misunderstanding that.

And SOME people are reading me to say that you DON'T have to do ANYHTING out of love for others - just believe and then like the devil. I never said that and heartily despise that notion.

WHERE are we misunderstanding each other?

No choice of the will can ever save a person. It is salvation by works too. But if God saves a person, He will enter their heart providing a new birth that bears witness to His presence, causing them to believe. That is, we believe because He saved us. And not because we chose to believe as kids do in Santa Clause.

~Sigh.~ This thread is not about Calvinism nor Catholic-bashing. And my belief in Jesus Christ is not like children believing in Santa Claus.
