Reynolds' statement that "God is active and controls quite a lot" cannot be construed as being a tenet of Deism in any way, shape, or form. It is a gross distortion of Reynolds' beliefs, and yes, is a lie.

That statement cannot. I agree. I was referring to the statement about God's providence being His setting up the laws of physics (which is identical to deist doctrine if taken alone).

That statement came after I had said that Reynolds view sounded like a Deist position. Go read my comment, I never said Reynolds was a Deist.
That being said, Reynolds does view God as being passive and observing His creation rather than being active in His creation. He has a nebulous "important vs unimportant" concept of God's activity. It is doubtful that he, or anyone can pinpoint what the important stuff is as opposed to the unimportant stuff. In that area, if we even dare to differentiate, it will be just a matter of opinion. I would like to see a scripture verse where God says He only concerns Himself with some of His creation and not all of it. I cannot think of any verse that supports such an opinion.
