If knowledge comes from the Holy Spirit, then why do we have to be told who Jesus is?

Peter knew who Jesus is even though Jesus hadn't told him who he is and then asked him to believe him.
If Peter's knowledge came from the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is necessary to believe anyway then shouldn't everybody who the Holy Spirit is working on automatically, supernaturally know who Jesus is without being told who he is?
I mean today it's totally different. People are told who Jesus is and who the bible says he is and they are asked to believe this. But none of them has the supernatural revelation which Peter had. If the Holy Spirit can simply give you this revelation then why do people even have to be told who Jesus is?
Shouldn't everybody automatically know it?
What would happen if the people were not told who Jesus said he is and if Jesus also had never said that he is the son of God? Then most likely nobody would even come to the idea of believing that he is the son of God, right? But according to what happened to Peter everybody who the Holy Spirit is working on should simply know it. I wonder how many christians simply knew all of a sudden who Jesus is. If the Holy Spirit simply gives people this knowledge then everybody can be saved even without even having heard about Jesus because the Holy Spirit could simply tell them who Jesus is and then they could get saved.

And where did the jews which converted suddenly know who Jesus is? Did God give them this knowledge and others not and only those which he gave this knowledge converted? Why did they suddenly believe in him even though they didn't believe in him before? What was different after the resurrection?

xdx, read the bible account. It plainly and specifically answers each of your questions. You're playing a guessing game, proping up strawmen (although you don't realize that), creating hypothetical situations that did not exist and don't exist today. You are debating yourself, mentally. You've got to get beyond this repetitive internal debate if you ever want to come to a clear understanding of the Gospel. The Gospel is GOOD NEWS, not the tangled web that you weave. If you haven't started on Celexa, do so. Yes, there is St. John's Wort and Kava Kava, as someone mentioned. In your case, however, IMHO you need something stronger than that. I'm sure you'll come up with all sorts of reasons not to use either of those OTC remedies. As long as you resist getting better, you'll stay perplexed in reading your bible and talking to others.

Peter knew who Jesus was because the Father revealed it to him, not because the Holy Spirit revealed it. The Father revealed it, in part, throught the experiences Peter had in Jesus presence and by witnessing Jesus' miracles and hearing his teaching. So, Peter's knowledge, was through his exposure to Jesus. It did not occur in a vacuum.

Let reason in the door for a minute. Peter already had the scriptures and already knew about the Messiah -- from both the teaching in Sabbath school and his own reading. But the Holy Spirit guided him each step of the way including the step where he accepted this carpenter from Nazareth regardless of the threats of his Sabbath school leaders.

The Holy Spirit will instruct all mankind -- but will not insert the bible into their heads. Lots of the details are missing for some native living in a jungle village with no access to actual scripture.
