No, I most certainly am a Baptist. I simply attend a Friends meeting. That's always been public knowledge - I said so as soon as I began posting on these boards, it's in my profile, and I posted information in the demoninations folder, at a moderator's request. No one has suggested yet that I'm not a Baptist because of my attending Friends' meeting for worship. I consider myself a Baptist, based on my beliefs. Oh, and I'm a member in good standing (to my knowledge - I haven't heard that I'm not in good standing) of Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.

Or was that humor that I'm too obtuse to get?

Diane, I think there may be a difference between "leaving the church" and attending a church at which a person feels comfortable and well fed. Rejecting the general principles of Baptists would certainly make one not a Baptist, but attending the services of a denomination that does not reject the general principles of Baptists?

Edited to add that if a moderator asked me to stop posting here, I would. I'd also consider doing it if another member had serious trouble with my posting here on the basis of my attending a Friends meeting (I say that because I'm sure there are members who would rather they never saw my name pop up again! [IMG] ). I'd be disappointed, and a little unclear as to how, then, we really define "Baptist," but I'd comply with the desires of the community.

Okay, sorry to get off topic there. [IMG]

KELLY! Gosh girl... I was referring to YOUR earlier question and NOT questioning your right to post here. I remember you attend the Quaker meetings monthly!

Kelly said and I wondered too:
My friend, Laura (Lala) is not allowed to post on the Baptist Women's Forum because she's non-denominational. That was why I wondered.

    Chill Guys! I ONLY said:

Oh, Diane! [IMG] I should have made my post more clear!! I'm completely chilled out.

I "edited to add" just cos it felt appropriate to do so - I totally took your question in the spirit it was asked but, looking at my post, can see that it doesn't appear that way at all.

I'm not threatening a walk out or nuttin' (pah-leaze! ;) ), just since it came up, letting the community know where I stand. I respect the community here, and believe strongly in corporate decision-making and listening to the minority voice, that's all. If someone were to have a problem, I wouldn't dismiss it.

Where's that blasted huggy icon? Didn't someone suggest that in the never ending discussion? [IMG]

Glad you didn't misunderstand! Laura is so neat and a great Christian and I'd love for her to be able to post freely on the board but she knew when I linked her here that it was a Baptist Board. She was looking for a place to study and ask deep questions.

No huggy thingy needed. I just didn't want you to misunderstand! I certainly was NOT questioning your right to post anywhere on the board. [IMG] In fact, I am guilty of replying under Fundamental when I am SBC. And sometimes I reply under Youth and I'm FAR from young. LOL

I was originally concerned with the combativeness of some of the posts, and then I realized...we're Baptists! It's what we do! [IMG]

I agree Sherri! I could go either non-denominational or CBF. I am really struggling with the issue right now, but our church has basically remained neutral in the controversy. If things change, I don't know what my wife and I will do.

I'd shop around a bit. Maybe try Ethiopian Orthodox, or Chinese Evangelical. No, seriously, I am not at all sure there would be another church I would seek membership in. I would enjoy worshipping with lots of other churches, but would be disinclined to "join" any that I have enjoyed visiting.

I've never met a combative Baptist in person...I think it's something associated with being on the other side of a computer screen...gets some people all riled up. (you like the way I said "some people"? ) [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

If you wish to direct something at me, kate, then pm me! But your continuously following me around the board and bashing me, and provoking me has to stop. You are disrupting every thread. Now stop it!

I do not think saying that my second choice for a church would not be SBC is mean, or me attending non-denominational church is mean.

The question was what would be my 2nd choice, and those are mine. I was thinking of asking my good friend to hop in the car with me , on the way to Rev. Joshua's Church this Sunday. You got a problem with that? Since you have made my business yours!

    I really have had enough.

Sherrie, I have not "followed" you around the board. I read a lot of topics,a nd post on the ones that are of interest to me, seeing as how I can't possibly post on all of them. I have not bashed you or anyone. I have not disruppted a single thread. You keep doing this, going off topic to jump on me.
I don't know what your problem is, but leave me alone. I refuse to allow you to prvoke me. I refuse to reply to your nasty attitude again. Next time I am just going to a moderator about this attacking.

[I've never met a combative Baptist in person...]

Ah, but you are in California! Most of the SBC churches from MO to VA east-west, and from Indiana to Texas north-south have LOTS of combative Baptists.

[IMG] And, by the way, there is a REASON why the last thing a preacher wants to do is speak at a WMU meeting! :D [IMG]

Against all my better judgment, I will respond to the question, although — with all the flavors of Baptists out there, certainly one should be able to find a suitable church:

    1. Church of the Brethren, a Mennonite derivative associated with the ABC-USA. (And there's even one nearby.)

    2. Conservative Anglican. Pass the paraments, please.

    3. Nazarene (Wesleyan to the nth degree, holiness without charisma.)

    4. Orthodox Quaker (hey, on two surveys, that's where I landed), although I'd have to travel a thousand miles or so to attend.

    5. "Modern" Church of Christ — wait before the stones start falling — that rejects baptismal regeneration. (That should make the Campbellites spin.) An example would be Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio (Max Lucado's church). Perhaps a bit too explicity Arminian, but generally baptistic. And which uses instrumental music.

As far as the Baptist only Froums go, I find that interesting as to how that should be followed. Baptists can certainley go to another denomination yet still be a Baptist per sae.

If there was an evangelical Quaker meeting in Australia I would go along to it also. I think that there idea of a Public Meeting is excellent.

Sure I am now a Baptist, Yet I grew up in the Salvation Army and even now still identify with the Salvation Army, and am pleased to be permitted to join in posting on there boards. So I think that People that have grown up as Baptists or been involved in any Baptist church should be more than welcome here.
