If you were an employer

This is to see if you, as an employer, would add a no sexual discrimination clause into your business. I personally would, and like to see it in place.
Reason? It goes both ways. An employer cannot discriminate against me because I'm straight! Sad that that is a possibility of being a problem, but...
That's my answer. What's yours?

I don't think that should be told to an employer. If the business has nothing to do with sex, why would someone need to know which way you swing?

Exactly. They don't need to know. This doesn't say you have to tell them, it protects you if it is found out, and it's very common for people to mention a spouse or a boyfriend/girlfriend at times in the workplace.

If I am hiring teachers for the Christian School or janitors to clean the building, I want the option to choose people who are not living in sin. I wouldn't hire a pedophile. I wouldn't hire a rapist. I wouldn't hire a man or woman "shacking up" together. I most certainly would not hire a homosexual.

I do not want that option taken away from churches.

Outside of a religious setting.
Would it be ok for a gay salon owner to deny you a job because you were straight?
Or McDonald's to deny you if you were gay?
What about churches and Christian schools? Would you hire a teacher that said they were gay, knew it was a sin, and had chosen to live life celibate since they had no desire for anyone of the opposite sex yet refused to give in to the desires they DID have because they were sinful?

I have a small business and if I knew a certain person that was applying was living a gay lifestyle I would not hire him because I have worked around men that talk openly about their gay lifestyle and I hated it. I also would not want to put my other employees in that situation. I feel it is my business and it should be my choice to hire whoever I desire.

If a gay person would not hire me because I'm straight...well, so what? I think it is his or her business and they should also have the right to do the same. "The man" already has his fingers in where they don't belong and there are too many laws protecting the employee and not enough for the business owner.

Gina, I see you tried to skewer the poll before it began by putting your opinion into the initial question.

Looks like it is not working!

And it won't be unless the Christian Right successfully undermines separation of church and state.

My thoughts exactly.

Ok, think separately between church and regular business. I may be changing my own mind though, 'cause SHOULD there be any separation between the two for a Christian?

I would not add the clause whether it is a Christian business or not. It is my right as an employer to choose who I want and don't want to work for me. At least that is true in a free nation like America (for now).

I just finished our updated Personnel Manual last week! No sexual discrimination clause mentioned.

1. XXXXX does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, color, age, national or ethnic origin or physical handicap in the hiring of its non-pastoral staff. Pastoral candidates must adhere to the ecclesiastical boundaries of gender.
2. Applicants considering a position at XXXXXXX Baptist Church must be able to provide acceptable employment/personal references and may be required to perform and pass a pre-employment examination. The pre-employment examination may include skills testing, safe driving, criminal record check, and child abuse history clearances.

The Christian Right wants the separation of Church and State to be as Thomas Jefferson intended when he made that statement. Right now it is not. What we have now is the expulsion of God from our Government; a concept our founding fathers never dreamed of.

But Joseph, what about Affirmative Action? Doesn't that influence who you choose to work for you? So maybe America isn't so free for now. Just a passing thought....

Affirmative action is being challenged in the Supreme Court and maybe it will be overturned. I have no doubt that at one time, it was a necessary evil. But today it has become a form of the most degrading, insulting racism that has ever attacked our country (white or otherwise).

SheEagle asks,
Deacon, what about testing for drugs...”
No drug testing, but we do mention drugs in the standard of conduct.
By the way, if any pastor or leadership person is interested I’d be willing to e-mail the manual. Just PM me with your e-mail address.

"Refrain from the use or possession of illegal drugs and alcohol
An employee’s job performance is negatively affected by the use of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse. The church cannot tolerate the use of illegal drugs or the abuse of alcohol and other substances by our employees. Any illegal possession, use or distribution of any controlled substance will result in immediate disciplinary action. Any employee having knowledge of illegal possession or use of controlled substances is expected to report such information to his/her supervisor."

All who disagree and would have a problem implementing this clause.
What is your opinion on Rolf's firing from Kodak? They have this clause, and it very well is the only thing that would win his case as an unjust firing.
What's your thoughts on that?
Should we stand up for him or not? Why should we if every employer should have the right to only employ like-minded people in their business?
