Suppose the people of the Country of MATCOM, invited you to be their king. As King you could make any law you wanted. You rule without opposition, a legislature body or courts.

You deicide that your first order of business is to decide if there should be protected classes against discrimination.

For Example -
1) should a business be allowed to give certain people a discount based on age?
2) Should a business be allowed to give certain discounts based on religion.
3) Should a businessman be allowed to hire anyone or not hire someone for any reason he sees fit.
4) Should a business be allowed to give a discount based on gender?

Remember you are the King of MATCOM - you can make any law you see fit. How would you rule on the above situations?

It would be helpful to first know what MATCOM stands for, population and religious make up, economy type, things like that.

I'll address these in accordance with the REAL Civil Rights laws. As long as you are giving the discounts to ALL people of that age and not discriminating against, say, Hispanics and Jews of that age, then Yes.

2) Should a business be allowed to give certain discounts based on religion.

As long as you are giving the discounts to ALL religions and not discriminating against, say, Catholics and Jews , then Yes.

3) Should a businessman be allowed to hire anyone or not hire someone for any reason he sees fit.

As long as any reason he sees fit isn't :

Race – Civil Rights Act of 1964
Color – Civil Rights Act of 1964
Religion – Civil Rights Act of 1964
National origin – Civil Rights Act of 1964
Age (40 and over) – Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
Sex – Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Civil Rights Act of 1964
Pregnancy – Pregnancy Discrimination Act
Citizenship – Immigration Reform and Control Act
Familial status – Civil Rights Act of 1968 Title VIII: Housing cannot discriminate for having children, with an exception for senior housing
Disability status – Vocational Rehabilitation and Other Rehabilitation Services of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
Veteran status – Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 and Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act
Genetic information – Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

4) Should a business be allowed to give a discount based on gender?

As long as you are giving the discounts to ALL people of that gender and not discriminating against, say, old Hispanics and young Jews of that gender, then Yes.

I do wonder what MATCOM is because he surely didn't just come up with it off the top of his head.

Zaac, Matcom has NO civil rights acts - you are starting from scratch

I'm the King of MATCOM. I have officially instituted those Civil Rights Laws and they are the parameters within which we deal with discrimination issues in MATCOM.

So you have many groups you want to protect, but you say it is okay to discriminate against gender? Why shouldn't gender be a protected class?

and why shouldn't people under 40 be protected? In fact before you said it was okay to discriminate against older people?

and when it comes family housing - why should Senior housing be exempted?

Where did I say that it's okay to discriminate against gender?

and why shouldn't people under 40 be protected?
Because they are dumb. J/K They are protected. I'm just addressing the 40 and over crowd because I noticed a propensity amongst employers to mistreat these wise people in my kingdom.
In fact before you said it was okay to discriminate against older people?

Because I'm King and I say so. But before I said so, I got my court to vote on it after we put the question on the ballot for the people to let us know how they feel. We all agreed to exempt senior housing so I made it into law.

As King, I would let businesses conduct themselves as they please, and I would laugh at people who demanded otherwise. I would also laugh at the businesses who could not be profitable, due to stupid business practices.

Bro. Curtis has it right. Let the free market dictate.

What I want to know is that with all these protected classes, that gender is not protected

Don't need any "civil rights act" to serve any of those so called "protected groups" in my business. It's a waste of paper.

Among those listed and, depending on the type of business, I would freely give discounts to any veteran or active duty military personnel.

Additionally, I would give discounts to senior citizens and anybody else I so desired.

Anybody that doesn't like it can stuff it.

I see no reason to conduct business any differently in these united states than I would in Matcom.
