I'm a Christian first, then a Baptist...

I work in the medical field. One of the things many hospitals ask in their pre-admissions questionnaire is, “What is your religion?”

I categorically put Baptist. The question is asking for one's religious affiliation, not one's testimony. If a pastor comes to visit me, they'll send a Baptist pastor.

 

Preach, from what I have seen on this board, I don't think all Baptists are born again Christians! How's that for blunt?

I am a follower of Christ.

Baptism by immersion when possible, yes.

When impossible, any way you can.

When totally impossible, it is still Christ who saves.

I have seen so many different 'flavors' of Baptists on this board, some of which I don't want to be associated with, that if it helps to specify "born again Bible believing YEC Christian," I will -- and I occasionally have.

But what I am, to the core of me, is a follower of Christ.

And, as stated above, I think, if my life, my actions, my personality, my words don't show that, then nothing else I call myself matters.

 

I can't help, but put my 2 cents in here!

In my opinion, you can't just use a single name anymore to identify who and what you are and believe. The liberal theologians and liberal Christians and the liberal Baptists have diluted and polluted the defining lines that once stood to mean the exact point of what you are.

So! I am a Born Again, Independant, Fundemental, KJ BIble believing, BAPTIST CHRISTIAN!

 

Helen, could you explain this further to me via email, PM, or a new thread. At a glance, I'd have to say I disagree with this statement. I just want to understand more clearly.

Read the Gulag Archipelago about a year ago and realized that there are prisoners who convert in controlled countries and have no chance of immersion. It was simply in reference to real impossibilities not just weird desires.

I am glad to be a Baptist. I like using "Baptist" rather than just Christian as it was already stated the term "Christian" is too broad. In fact, just to define it a little more I am a Southern Fundamental Authorized King James Bible-believing Baptist.

 

Why would you even consider calling yourself a protestant? Baptist are not part of the protestant movement as they prexisted Catholisim which was what was being protested.

As for me... I am a Christian regardless of religion. I believe in my heart that being a Christian is far more important than the label Baptist. As far as people muddling what Christian means... that has little to do with my belief that I am one. And more to do with arguements that mean nothing to my convictions. A persons decision to call themself "Christian" is between them and God. Being Baptist may be more important than being a Christian to you, but to me...it is just a more descriptive destinction of the main one...which is Christian.

Opposed Rome? Yea, I guess you have a point...but that is not the common accepted meaning of the term Protestant as I understand it.

I'm sorry, I know this is contradictory to what many Baptists believe elivating the importance of title such as Baptist is just pride. I think it presumes to elevates us, and lessons the focus on who should get the attention, Christ... I am nothing, He is everything...Why should it matter what I call myself... it's just people pleasing...instead of God pleasing. IMO. I never understood the pridefulness in which people proclaim their religious title... sorry.

 

As Deacon stated how many people write down Baptist as their religion, but they really aren't...I've heard the same thing about jails. In fact, try it...go to the drunk tank on a Saturday night and the majority will claim to be Baptist. (And don't even start another thread on wine drinking or no wine drinking, that's not what I'm saying, okay?)
I agree with Bro. Adam on this one for sure, Christian in faith, Baptist in doctrine.
Everyone knows that Christ comes before you get Baptized, why would you want to do it backwards?

But what a shame! If they truly ARE Baptists, makes one wonder what kind of sermons they hear at their "Baptist" church or where their pastor got their training!

According to what I've seen posted on this board, "Baptist" is now seeming to become generic like the term "Christian." Pitiful.

 

Unfortunately, because of liberalism in both the Baptist churches and in Born Again Christians, there are no decisive lines anymore, to distinguish the differences between any of the so called Christian churches. And the differences that are there now, are becoming more and more invisable by the year, or even by the day!

 

In an overly generic application your statement could be considered true...but it's not absolutely true in actuality.

If looking at this question from a heavenly perspective... I would think that being Christian would not be downplayed as a bad thing. Being a Baptist seems to be the most important thing to some people...and again... I say...get some perspective.
