"We Americans treat the Brits with respect,"
    "'
You don't, you guys truly don't.

    "the Germans as equals,"
    ''
The only reason the Germans haven't joined the French on the despised by the US list is that Rumsfeld is afraid that Joschka Fischer will bash his head in with a lead pipe if he says anything rude about them.

"and the rest of Europe as slightly above vassal level. You got the "unruly children" part right! "
    ''
    Ofcourse.

"And no respect for the French."
    ''
The French are most unruly of all the 'kids' and the ones that demand to be treated like adults the most.

Yes, we do, oh yes, we do. If you're talking about when the President trashed the queen's rose garden, well, that was the current President, and he's made a few blunders, so that shouldn't count. Didn't you read Margaret Thatcher's eulogy of Ronald Reagan?

Besides all that, many Americans love Tony Blair.

I've never even heard of that before now.

A beautiful speech proving that Thatcher admired and strongly liked both Reagan and the USA, but we weren't talking about the British respect of the USA, we were looking in the other direction...

An obvious conclusion would be that it is a mutual admiration. They wouldn't admire and strongly like us unless they felt it was reciprocated. Case in point: France. The French have proven of late they have no use for the US. We, on the other hand, have grown to dislike and distrust the French (not the French people, per se, but the leadership).

The 3 groups that decide what the USA seems to think of other countries are the White House, the opinion piece writers and Hollywood.
Unless the Brits are in the middle of actually doing the Yanks a favour, they are rarely portrayed in a flattering fashion by any of the 3.

The French have had no use for the US since de Gaulle was in office.
The relationship between those 2 great countries has been somewhat strained for decades. It is more visible at the moment, because the current occupants of the White House aren't exactly gifted at diplomacy.
