I was useing that for an example about the mail man, and I know it's a calling from God and I don't take my calling lightly eather. A preacher should take his calling seriouse but should never boast and have a proud heart, that is one of the things God hates.:type:

Amen, Amen, Amen!!! I have seen it all too many times..... A preacher get up from behind the pulpit and use a passage of scripture as a springboard to hit everything under the sun, and the people amen and shout, and then you have a preacher that is expounding on the Word of God and giving you some meat and those same shouters sit there like they are getting ready to fall asleep.....Reminds me of a message that I think Ed Bellue? preached, "Then Came the Pharisees"..JMHO..

    Been there too!

Just last year.. the preacher before me, knew just what to say to get an "amen"
I don't care if i do or not... I preach what the word says... Those shouters didn't amen one time!!

But others afterward thanked me for the "meat and conviction" that I served them.

It's easy to shout amen when the preacher is preaching against Homosexuality.... especially if you're straight!
But preach on Gossip, or the need to reach todays goths, and you get none!

We're an "amening" church here too, and this is one of our preacher's pet peeves. He tells the men not to amen unless its convicting their OWN self. We don't amen AT other people.........at least we aren't supposed to. We're supposed to amen when we are the ones getting hit with that two-edged sword, or when the blessing is personal to us as well.Ive seen my share of the other kind of amening too. Always makes me feel more irritated than convicted.

Although they would vehemently deny it because they "love good preachin' on sin" but these are people who like to have their ears tickled.

The "preachin'" isn't directed to the spiritual needs of the audience for the most part. They already agree with the sinfulness of homosexuality and the encroachment of liberalism. That type of preaching is effectively a way to pump up people's pride... to feed a feeling of spiritual superiority. They can say "amen" because they don't do those things. When someone actually expounds the Word of God and addresses their need, they don't get the affirmation of their ego that they're used to.

Sadly, they think this means that the preacher isn't spiritual and isn't doing his job.

Samuel Butler said someone (preachers?) would

compound for sins they are inclined to
by damning those they have no mind to

Excellent point! That's why we almost get angry when the preacher is sometimes "nailing hide" on the world. We really do think we're better sometimes. In a way, I understand the delight in holy living, but that delight ought to come from understanding holiness instead of ranting in unholiness.

Thing is, the preachers we are talking about here on this thread are not preaching in this manner. (just against sins that we all agree are bad). Its not the shallow amen's they are going for. Of course they might mention these sins we can all agree on as being bad.......but in my experience with the preachers I've mentioned the vast majority of their preaching is on OUR own sins, sins that CHristians typically fall into and need to be jolted out of.

Although, you realize we've gotten into talking about more high-profile preachers here. Their audience is oftentimes likely to be broader than the average pastor. And so if they are speaking to a broader spectrum of people than they need to hit on that broader spectrum of issues.

Amening I have no problem with. And the amening I object to is not really even the preacher's fault. ITs the people who are amening in a self-righteous, stick-it-to-em fashion.

What about the preachers that every other line are fishing for amens in their message?

Asking for an amen once in awhile is fine. Just don't go fishing for one to stroke your ego every couple of minutes.

I guess I just wouldn't assume they are necessariliy trying to stroke their ego by asking for amens alot. Some preachers do better when they have a responsive congregation. Im sure you are right, PastorSBC, in that there are some who are looking for an ego boost. But I also think that there's too much assumption that this is the case by people who don't really know. (not saying thats you, just in general.)

My pastor will assume we have gone to sleep if he doesn't get an amen now and then.
