No, the author of the story did not say that.

The woman, Janet Porter, who writes the column in which she is reporting the story said that.

The story was written by a man named Tom Fife. Others on the Internet have said that they personally know Tom Fife, that he is not a fictional person and that they have no reason to believe the story is fictional.
I was referring to the author of the OpEd story that we were given the url to. The question is whether they have any reason (e.g. facts) to believe the story is based on fact.

Who are the "others on the Internet"? Did they give their names?

The author says this about her story:

I can't prove whether it's true or not,

I'll wait for the truth.

Whether something is "truth" or not is not dependant upon someone's ability to prove it.

"Truth" exists regardless of evidence.

Without proof you may choose to accept or reject something as "truth".
