If anything is clear from the new National Intelligence Estimate, it's that the U.S. intelligence agencies have no clear idea of what's going on in Iran. The authors of the intelligence estimate concede that despite their earlier conclusions they can't really say how far Iran's nuclear program has advanced, or how close Iran is to developing atomic weapons. It's irrefutable that Iran may have a nuclear weapon in the foreseeable future — whether in 2009, 2013 or 2015 is not so clear.

It's also clear from parusing blogs that we have a friend in the Iranian populace. That will change with a few bombs...

Also, why should we start another war, with another country, when our borders let criminals in by the millions ? Shouldn't we fix that first ? If Bush & co would at least pretend to be interested in that, I may listen to him about Iran. But we have problems at home that he has absolutely refused to even address.

Also, these are the same people who gave estimates about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. This is not a political statement, but why would anyone believe what they said one way or the other?

You are 100% right about our warped priorities. We are so focused on a possible third war, and we are letting thousands of thugs, criminals, and possibly terrorists in the country every week.

I had high hopes for this administration, and voted for them twice. It is not going to happen. The flawed leadership is ingrained so deeply, and the time is so short, the best thing we can do is all we can to get a decent leader next time. That means not a democrat and a few of the republicans.

The Washington Times is a newspaper owned by Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. In a speech on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Washington Times, Moon explained his motivation behind establishing the paper. "I founded The Washington Times as an expression of my love for America and to fulfill the Will of God, who seeks to establish America in His Providence," he said.

U.S. intelligence agencies, in a report released on Monday, concluded that Iran had a covert nuclear weapons program, but halted it in 2003. But Martinon said the report did not allay France's concerns. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and U.S. President George W. Bush discussed the report earlier this week.
"We cannot at all conclude that the threat has decreased," said Martinon.

In our judgment, only an Iranian political decision to abandon a nuclear weapons objective would plausibly keep Iran from eventually producing nuclear weapons-and such a decision is inherently reversible."[/FONT]

[FONT=times new roman,times]These statements clearly address the idea that the political will of the Iranian regime is the ultimate key to their pursuit of nuclear weapons. The regime feels threatened by the US's massive military buildup in the region, the status of Israel's nuclear armaments, and the very existence of Israel. Any one of these political issues could easily trump a "cost-benefit analysis." [/FONT]

[FONT=times new roman,times]Granted we are all sitting on the outside looking in, however, there are solid reasons to be nervous about this estimate. Effective arguments can be made that Ahmadinejad is motivated more by prophesy than he is by a "cost-benefit" analysis.[/FONT][FONT=times new roman,times][3] Missing the mark on this estimate allows a leader with messianic tendencies to obtain nuclear weapons. There have been calls made for outside panel to review the NIE......maybe that is not such a bad idea in this case.[/FONT]
