I regret the death of Cecil and hope Palmer gets punished. However the media has overemphasized the death of the animal and put Cecil up to the level of a human. Palmer has received death threats which is sad as the Lion is no human. I find it quite sad that people can justify the death of millions of babies yet throw a Frinze when a prized animal is murdered. Sad...

Crabby, how ethical was Cecil when he ate other animals - and by the way - those animals died an agonizing slow death.

Salty, he was very ethical for a lion. After all that is what God created lions to do. Cecil did not kill for the fun of killing or to collect trophies. I am not at all sure God approves of humans killing animals for fun or for trophies. What say you?

I read where Cecil had been the top dog, I mean lion for thirteen years. He was probably four years old when he became top lion so that would put him at seventeen years old. Know doubt he would have been challenged by another lion in the near future and killed by the next in line. Also Cecil was not very smart because the female lions do most of the hunting and killing of other animals and share the kill with the males but ole Cecil takes off on his own to get a easy free meal. I was thinking how much people have changed over the years as my mind went back to Teddy Roosevelt the big game hunter that killed a lot of big game in his life time and people didn't get all bent out of shape in those days. I am a hunter myself, my forefathers were all hunters killing animals to put meat on the table. With all the animal activist today and all the crazies running around I predict that the killing of any animal will be outlawed in the future.

"Did all those Americans signing petitions understand that lions actually kill people? That all the talk about Cecil being “beloved” or a “local favorite” was media hype? Did Jimmy Kimmel choke up because Cecil was murdered or because he confused him with Simba from “The Lion King”?

In my village in Zimbabwe, surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been beloved, or granted an affectionate nickname. They are objects of terror."
....
"Recently, a 14-year-old boy in a village not far from mine wasn’t so lucky. Sleeping in his family’s fields, as villagers do to protect crops from the hippos, buffalo and elephants that trample them, he was mauled by a lion and died."
....
"PETA is calling for the hunter to be hanged. Zimbabwean politicians are accusing the United States of staging Cecil’s killing as a “ploy” to make our country look bad. And Americans who can’t find Zimbabwe on a map are applauding the nation’s demand for the extradition of the dentist, unaware that a baby elephant was reportedly slaughtered for our president’s most recent birthday banquet."
,....
"And please, don’t offer me condolences about Cecil unless you’re also willing to offer me condolences for villagers killed or left hungry by his brethren, by political violence, or by hunger."

Well, if we can't kill them with firearms, we'll just (inevitably) kill more with fenders. That outcome, plus things like Lyme disease and ecological damage thru excess herbivory, will result in calls for control of animal populations. Do we really think it wise to exchange a program that provides revenue for things like protecting habitat and conducting search and rescue, for a taxpayer-funded sharpshooter or other animal control personnel?

Oddly enough, I've noticed that all the cats I've had throughout my life have killed for the "fun of killing." Probably it's to hone a skill they will never need as their food comes from the pet store, but they certainly like killing things....and not too quickly either. I think they are baptists also, but I'm not sure what kind.
