    &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;I would prefer to go to a school where people were there who were qualified and not just there because of their gender or race. I really don't want to go to a school where they let people in who are not smart enough because they are the correct skin color. This is not diversity, this is stupidity.&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;
    ...........................................
I note that you are only a dozen miles away from Little Rock, where there was a tremendous squabble about diversity in 1957. Federal Troops had to be called in by the President to prevent mob violence that was working against a federal court order to integrate the Little Rock Central High School. I remember the hatred shown by the local residents, because I was there. I wonder to what extent your views are influenced by the residue of that local hatred. I know that you will probably deny it, but the chance exists that you are at least a little influenced by what was then a deep seated feeling of hate among at least some of the white residents. No one, no matter how much influenced by Christianity, is immune from the predominant feelings of their community.

I think it is fair to say that the Christian community of Jacksonville and central Arkansas at that time was entirely silent about the evil done by the lack of diversity in their own community, and it is a matter of historical record, that your people, the Baptist public in Central Arkansas, opposed even the most elementary type of diversity that eventually did come, through the intervention of federal courts.

Thank you for assuming incorrectly that I am a racist who hates black people. The truth is, I wasn't alive when the Little Rock nine went to Central High School and was certainly not in the Little Rock area. For the record, the Democratic segregationist, Governor Orval Faubus was an evil racist with the spirit of anti Christ who did not care about education and doing what was best for the children, but keeping the blacks away from the whites. I believe in those days, it did not matter whether you were smart enough or not, if you were the right color (white), then you could go to any college you wanted. Interestingly enough, in today's enlightened society, it still doesn't matter if you are smart enough or not, if you are the right color (black), you not only can go to any college you want, you can also get a free ride based on nothing but the color of your skin and keep others out based on nothing but the color of their skin. Both ways are racist and both ways are wrong. We sure have come a long way, haven't we while ignoring the words of the civil rights leader MLK when he dreamed of a day when his children would be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin?

Is that clear enough, Peter, or do you want to make another ignorant statement about who I am and who the people of Little Rock are today? Are we perfect? No, only God is perfect. There is still racism here in Arkansas. But, don't act like we have the corner on that because we are in Little Rock. I am guessing from your comments that you think it is a good thing for the government to allow some people in colllege and keep others out based on the color of their skin? You might have fit right in with the angry mob of bigots in the 1960's Little Rock. I guess you think they should be let in because obviously black people are academically inferior to whites and couldn't compete without a little help from affirmative action? Thank You Jimmy the Greek.

any black person can go to any college for free? wow </font>[/QUOTE]You're right. The free part was incorrect. Sorry. Of course, the main idea that you can get in not based on academic merit, but based on the color of your skin is absolutely true. I think it shows the true racism of liberalism. Also, other people are kept out not on the basis of academic failure, but based on the color of their skin. Do you not think this is wrong? If not, you are no better than Orval Faubus and the bigoted segregationists of the 50's and 60's.

I wonder if you are as judgmental of our former President Clinton who lived in Little Rock just a few blocks down from Central High for many years. Would that explain his racism towards black people that he exhibits when he presents a liberal ideology that says blacks are not white enough or smart enough to make it in society so therefore, we must dumb down the curriculum for them and give them a leg up while handicapping all the evil whiteys?

This is also blatantly false. Even those who are a certain color must achieve in something. Just because a person is black does NOT mean that they get automatic entrance to an institution.

We must also bring up the fact that many less-qualified people are allowed to attend certain colleges by virtue of rich parents or by having alumni parents. If we criticize one, we must criticize the other.

I was accepted to an Ivy League School because of my test scores and my leadership, not because of my GPA. (I didn't go, of course - I went to a Baptist college instead.) Is it okay if schools allow admittance because of test scores and not achievement? What about leadership? What about being gifted in music?

Universities use many, many different markers for admittance into their college. Looking back, I do wish that Samford would have had more African-Americans. Two of my best friends were black, and it was difficult for them. I think it would have added to my education, but to many of the other students there as well.

Perhaps you haven't fully looked at the issue from my point of view? You need more diversity in your life to make you more tolerant of others views. [IMG]

I don't think a person's race should play any part whatsoever in whether or not they get the spot in any college. Do you or do you not agree? Why or why not?

Joseph - you stated that any black person could get into any school because they are black - is that true?

Is it true that a severely mentally retarded black man can go to Harvard simply because he is black?

Please don't dodge the issue, please clarify your earlier statements

First of all, I never said I, personally, was post-modern. I do, however, live in a post-modern age. I am not a liberal, as the majority of people here will attest to. Next, I do not believe that all truth is relative. Now that we have our ad hominems out of the way, the fact is that your comment is, indeed, false. Just because a person is black does not mean that he can attend any university that he wants. A friend of mine in high school who went to my church wanted to attend a private college in Georgia. He did was not accepted, even though he was black and had a good GPA and test scores.

Again, even those who are a certain color must achieve in something. Just because a person is black does NOT mean that they get automatic entrance to an institution.

Don'r care much about what your opinion is. However, don't lie and make up things to prove your point...especially things that are as blatantly false as saying that, and I quote, "if you are the right color (black), you not only can go to any college you want, you can also get a free ride based on nothing but the color of your skin and keep others out based on nothing but the color of their skin." If you want to fight affirmative action, fine, but don't spout this tripe to support your beliefs. To do so is lying, and is therefore, anti-Christian.

And to answer your question, I have no problem with colleges taking race into account when selecting people, just as I have no problem with colleges taking legacies (students who have had parents attend), giftedness in a variety of areas, or extra-curricular activies. However, race, nor anything else, should be the SOLE reason for admission.

we all had the same "father and mother", adam and eve. how does one separate brothers and sisters into different races? YOU CAN'T. God does not discriminate. neither should we. love everyone as Jesus Christ does. regardless of what they look like.

I will close with this: This is a racist philosophy. So much for standing against racism. A person's race should play no part in selection. Their academic qualifications are what should matter.

    Joseph,

In ordinary usage, diversity has come to mean welcoming people of different backgrounds into the workplace or academic environment. That is what first comes to mind for me. When anyone questions diversity as a goal, then the first thing that comes to my mind is that they have some reason to disagree with the results of the various civil rights legislation of the past few years. In regard to how the goal of a diverse student body is implemented, I have heard that there is no uniformity in it, but that many different factors, including race, are taken into account when granting admission. It is also my impression that in many places, those who are non-white are give a few extra points to add to the cumulative total, and it is weighted along with many other factors. If this is the case, it is not true that race alone will gain admission for anyone. A policy that gives a non-white a slight advantage over a caucasion, when everything else is equal, does not cause me much heartburn, and I am white. I think you should learn to accept such things also, as a bit of counterbalance to the widespread racism that still exists in the country. If in a few select places, such as college admissions, non-whites are given a slight advantage, then it makes up to some extent for the far more numerous instances where they suffer losses because of discrimination.

So you don't even answer your blatant lie about anyone who is black can go to whatever school he wants and get accepted? Come on, now! I expected more from you! You gave a straight-faced lie, you were called on it, and now you don't address it?

You still have not answered the favortism that is given children of alumni, those with giftedness in the arts, students who show very strong leadership in high school, athletes, and so on. Colleges accept these students because it makes a good experience for the student body at large. They believe that a diverse school provides many things that a homogenous school would.

That said, the policy where race is taken into doesn't make the schools racist. It shows that they understand the dynamics of students, and they believe that having a diverse surrounding can provide education that they may not be able to learn in the classroom. I would have a problem if any specific race were to be allowed in regardless of their academic records, but this has never been shown to be the case.

The actual rules vary from school to school. I suspect that not many institutions of higher education have policies that are as simple as you suggest above. Maybe you can detail the admission policies of one such "liberal" university, or is it just a gut feeling that you have?

It is always a pity when pride prevents one from admiting their mistakes.
