Is God Able To regenerate sinners before their faith in Christ?

I disagree. Paul was saved the moment he believed Jesus was Christ.

Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou Lord?

Paul knew he was speaking to God here, but he did not know his name.

And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Now by the Word of God Paul knows the Lord is Jesus whom he has been persecuting. Faith comes by hearing, and now he believes, look at what he answered;

6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what will thou have me to do?

See how Paul now submits to Jesus as Lord. Before he believed Jesus a blasphemer. Before he violently persecuted those who followed Jesus. But now he knows and believes Jesus is the Lord and is willing to obey whatever he is commanded.

This is when Paul believed and was regenerated, given a new heart.

This verse doesn't even mention faith.

Winman, The reason I presented the verse from Philippians is that it shows that once God begins a work of salvation in one of His elect He will bring it to completion, includng Glorification at the return of Jesus Christ. I show it again:

Philippians 1:6, KJV
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

The following is certainly not original with me but it shows those different aspects of Salvation. I believe it is consistent with what most people see as the Doctrine of Grace.

Salvation, A Multifaceted Gem
Salvation, the blessing of grace, is that work of the Triune God by which He eternally redeems and reconciles to Himself those chosen in Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world [Ephesians 1:4], freeing them from bondage to sin and His holy wrath. That salvation is purchased by the blood of the Incarnate Son [Romans 5: 9; Hebrews 9: 14; 1 Peter 1: 18; 1 John 1: 7; Revelation 1: 5; Revelation 7: 14], the blood of the everlasting covenant [Matthew 26: 28; Hebrews 13: 20], and is made effective in the life of the elect by the Holy Spirit through union with Jesus Christ. Salvation from beginning to end is entirely by the Sovereign Grace of the Triune God.

Salvation is a once for all time occurrence in the life of the elect. However, as we see explicitly in Romans 8:28-30, and throughout Scripture, there are a number of events that are associated with salvation. In some of these man takes an active roll but in most of them he is entirely passive. If we consider salvation, this blessing of grace, as a multifaceted gem, we may better appreciate both the gift of salvation and the work of God, in particular God the Holy Spirit, in the salvation of those whom God the Father, before the foundation of the world, has chosen in Jesus Christ, God the Son.

1. Regeneration

The initial event in salvation is regeneration, the theological term synonymous with ‘rebirth’ or ‘being born again’. Regeneration is solely the work of God the Holy Spirit whereby those who are spiritually dead in trespass and sin are made spiritual alive and are brought into union with Jesus Christ [Ephesians 2:1-9]. Although Regeneration is the initial event in Salvation the following aspects are not necessarily in chronological order.

2. Union with Jesus Christ

Union with Jesus Christ is an integral part, a condition, of God’s electing grace and this union is solely the work of God the Holy Spirit.

3. Effectual Calling

Insofar as man himself is aware, the initial event in salvation is the effectual calling of the Holy Spirit. It is an observable fact that not all who hear the Gospel accept it and come to salvation. The regenerate do, the unregenerate do not.

4. Conversion

Conversion is the result of conscious act of a regenerate person in which he responds to the effectual call and turns to God in faith and repentance. Conversion is in reality an acknowledgment that one has experienced regeneration.

4a. Saving Faith

Saving faith is an essential aspect of conversion and, though exercised by man, is itself a gift of God [Ephesians 2:8,9] The prophet Habakkuk who writes [2: 4b]: the just shall live by his faith, is echoed by the Apostle Paul in that great faith chapter of the New Testament, Hebrews 11, which clearly demonstrates that faith is, in fact, a way of life.

4b. Repentance

Like faith repentance is also an essential aspect of conversion. However, the repentance associated with conversion must be proceeded by faith, that is, a person cannot truly repent of his sins against God until he believes that God is and that he has sinned against God. There are many who insist that repentance precedes faith.

5. Pardon

A righteous God cannot overlook sin for the wages of sin is death [Romans 6.23]. Man is not a sinner because he sins but man sins because he is a sinner. As such he is subject to the wrath of God [Romans 5:12, Romans 1:18]. All who exercise God given repentance obtain forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Forgiveness or pardon implies deliverance from the penalty of sin.

6. Justification

Justification is a judicial act whereby the unjust sinner is declared righteous in the sight of a just and holy God. John Dagg in his Manuel of Theology [page 265] notes that justification is a higher blessing of grace than pardon. Pardon frees from the penalty that follows sin, justification frees us from the guilt of sin. Justification is by faith alone [Romans 5:1] and that faith itself is the gift of God [Ephesians 2:8,9].

7. Adoption

God adopts as sons all who believe in Jesus Christ [Galatians 3:26, 1 John 3:1, Romans 8:16,17]. Although we are called the sons of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ this does not mean that we occupy the same position relative to God the Father as Jesus Christ [John 10:30-33, Colossians 2:9, Philippians 2:5-10]. When God the Son took upon Himself the form of man He laid aside His Glory but not His Deity. Though we are called the sons of God by adoption we will never be divine.

8. Sanctification

The Holy Spirit continues to sanctify those whom He has regenerated and finally prepares them fully for the service and enjoyment of life in the presence of God.

9. Perseverance or Security of the True Believer

The doctrine of the ‘Perseverance of the Saints’ or the ‘Security of the True Believer’ is one that is cherished by most Baptists. The statement from the 1677 [or 1689] Baptist Confession of Faith [Lumpkin, Baptist Confessions of Faith, page 272] expresses this doctrine in the following excerpt:

Those whom God hath accepted in the Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by His Spirit, and given the precious faith of His elect unto, can neither totally nor finally fall from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end and be eternally saved, seeing the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, (whence He still begets and nourishish them in Faith, Repentance, Love, Joy, Hope, and all the graces of the Spirit unto immortality).

10. Assurance of Salvation

If we do not believe that True Believer’s are kept by the power of God and will persevere to the end it is doubtful that we can ever have any assurance of our salvation. Therefore, every passage of Scripture that demonstrates the security of the believer should provide the believer assurance of that security. The first basis for assurance is the testimony of the Word of God. The second basis for assurance of salvation is subjective. The Apostle John tells us [1 John 5:10]: He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself. That witness is the indwelling Holy Spirit

11. Glorification

God will bring to glory those He has saved through the sacrifice of His Son. Glorification is the final facet on the gem of salvation. Redemption is complete, the sin struggle is over. We who are heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ [Romans 8:17] will be like Him for we will see Him as He is [1 John 3:2].

Show me a verse that says a person must be made alive or regenerated to believe. You can't do it, because no such scripture exists. Your whole doctrine is based on something not found in the Bible.

I on the other hand have shown you many verses that say a person must believe to have life.

Winman the passage Ephesians 2:1-10 has been presented on this forum hundreds of times. It clearly shows that God through divine action regenerates or makes alive one who is dead in tresspass and sin and then gives the gift of FAITH!

Old Regular, there are probably dozens if not hundreds of sites I can go online to read Calvinist creeds and doctrine. I am interested in YOU showing even one verse of scripture that directly says a person must be regenerated to have the ability to believe. Surely doctrine of such monumental importance is stated directly somewhere.

But know what? It isn't. You have to read into scripture, twist and manipulate scripture in a futile attempt to make it say what you wish it would say, but doesn't.

But I have shown you multiple verses such as Jn 1:12 which says to those who received and believed on Jesus, to them God gave power to become a son of God. They were not regenerated until God gave them this power AFTER they first believed.

I have shown you Jn 20:31 where John says his words are written that we might believe. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. But this verse also says, "and that believeing ye might have life". This verse clearly shows you do not have life unless you believe.

So, besides not providing scripture that supports your doctrine, you brazenly ignore MUCH scripture that easily refutes you.

And then to top it all, you and your cronies try to label me a heretic. You do this in desperation, because you KNOW scripture does not support you, but refutes you.

Folks are not stupid, those who truly want to know the truth will see who has presented truth.

I agree with the second statement above, Folks are not stupid, blind sometimes but not stupid.

That being said you have not presented truth in your first statement. I have never called you a heretic. I did say one of your posts was at best semi pelagianism and at worst pelagianism. Both of these have been labeled heresy by Church councils but I have never labeled you a heretic.

Incidentally I know this is useless but the following Scripture has been posted in response to your mantra:

1 Corinthians 2:14, KJV
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The natural man is the unregenerate man.

Galatians 3:2 refutes your interpretation of 1 Cor 2:14.

Gal 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Paul shows here that a person first believes and afterward receives the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

These Corinthians had already received the Spirit, so according to Gal 3:2 they had already heard the gospel and believed.

So, these "things of God" mentioned in verses 9-15 are not the gospel, but the "deep things of God" (vs. 10)

The natural man can hear and believe the gospel, and when he does he receives the Spirit so he can understand these deep things of God.

The gospel is simple, a child can understand it.

2 Tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Gal 3:2 The Spirit ye received
What does, "or out of hearing of faith/belief," mean? From Greek Interlinear. Or "or out of a hearing of a trust," Form Westcott and Hort Interlinear

How and why is man given the promise of the Spirit?

Bear in mind in verse 1 of chapter 3 Paul has left Jesus Christ impaled on a stake and he then ask them that question.

If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, the Spirit of truth;
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. -------How???

And before the coming of the faith, under law we were being kept, shut up to the faith about to be revealed, so that the law became our child-conductor -- to Christ, that by faith we may be declared righteous, (Whose/what faith makes us righteous?)
and the faith having come, no more under a child-conductor are we,

Faith is, the kept promise of God concerning an inheritance to the one seed of Abraham who in verse one was impaled on a stake dead as a doornail.
By the regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, the receiving of the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father, of the one impaled on the stake, the promise of the hope of eternal life The Faith came. That is the faith they heard by which they received the Holy Spirit.

In all scriptures perceived as regeneration the life and or quickening is what we have in Christ by the Holy Spirit which is also the assurance of Christ giving us that life at his appearing.

Nothing was said in the posted Scripture about the deep things of God!

1 Corinthians 2:14, KJV

The natural man is dead spiritually in trespass and sin! God through the Apostle Paul says that the things of God are foolishness to the natural man because the things of God are SPIRITUALLY discerned. But you say different; you say this natural man can hear and believe the gospel! Is the Gospel of God? Now who is correct you or God? Strange that you think you are more knowledgeable and authorative than God. Sounds like the BIG EYE is at it again!

I have been enjoying most all your posts. They contain the truth of God.
When someone keeps resisting truth they can only go into darkness:thumbs:
35Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

John 6:
52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Life is not within us at all, we are given life to eat Jesus. We are to eat every word don't let one single precious morel go to waste. This is words from Jesus and words about Him even little commentaries from the one whom Jesus loved. Life is in Jesus not in us.

We have to turn away from us and turn to Jesus.

I have found and come to the conclusion whom ever believes that they are already regenerated, it is a waste of time and it is ridiculous to preach faith to them whom are already saved.

They cry they want meat not milk, this is the teaching about righteousness and living what we believe, putting every morsel of precious Christ to use in us. That they may see are good deeds and praise our Father in heaven.

We want to talk a good Paul, but to live as Paul did. To be everything to everyone to win them to Jesus Christ.

When I see scripture like no one is good and no one seeks God, it doesn't tell me their inability, but their need to hear the good news and spread the Gospel to those who are no good, and do not seek God, sinners and tell them the good news about Jesus Christ.

Truth? Truth? Truth?

So, you are saying that it's consistent with the Word that someone regenerated needs to be saved? If someone is regenerated, the preacher then tells them they must be saved? Someone who has be given a "new birth" needs to be saved? Wow!! That sure sounds like "sound" doctrine; sound as a "dull thud".

"you'll never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold on Jesus.” All these are thoughts about self, and we will never find comfort or assurance by looking within."

It is a real shame when men try to look within them or believe they are ready have what they need to be save. We must look at the Holy Spirit and turn to Him when He is reaching out to us through the words of Jesus. Our salvation is not within ourself but in Jesus.

We are born again by His word not by anything we have within turn to Jesus and remain in Him our salvation.

Regeneration before faith, save the saved, that is ridiculous

This post right here is one of the best ones posted in this thread.:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Check out what else the Council of Orange condemned:

We not only do not believe that any are foreordained to evil by the power of God, but even state with utter abhorrence that if there are those who want to believe so evil a thing, they are anathema.

Well, looks like the Council of Orange would have condemned one John Calvin, huh?

John Calvin writes: “Solomon also teaches us that not only was the destruction of the ungodly foreknown, but the ungodly themselves have been created for the specific purpose of perishing (Prov. 16:4).” (Calvin’s New Testament Commentaries: Romans and Thessalonians, pp.207-208)

The natural man(physical body) will never commune with God because it still has the stain of sin in it, and will have it until Jesus calls it forth from the ground, or those who are alive in Christ will be given that glorified Spiritual body. The soul, on the other hand(Randy Travis style), has been cleansed up. Though it was seperated from God due to sinning, God communes with that soul. Adam and Eve died just as God had warned them about them doing it, and yet He communed with them. The dead(sinners) shall hear, and the dead(sinners) that hear, shall live.

The spiritually dead can, and does, hear God. Even Abraham talked with the rich man, even though there was a great gulf betwixt them. Again, Adam and Eve were spiritually dead, and God talked with them. Jesus spoke with many who were dead in their sins, and yet He spoke to them. I take the Word over any man made theological system any day.

Yes Willis, Jesus had the power to speak to the spiritually dead. And God's Word has this power, whether read off a page of scripture, or preached by a preacher. The spiritually dead can hear it, and if they be willing to hear it and believe, then God will regenerate them, their sins will be forgiven, their hearts made new, and they will become a son of God.

When you deny that the spiritually dead can hear the word of God you are also denying the power of the word of God. Jesus said the dead (not the living) shall hear his voice, and those that hear shall be made alive.

Another thing to add to this wonderful post; hearing brings about life, and not life brings about hearing. Some on here have this bakkards(hillbilly for backwards).......

There in is where your doctrine has it's short comings. In like the Catholic's you'd rather believe old dead men than the truth of the gospel. There is no power in what men have to say. Only God's words has the real power and truth. Be God dependant not man dependant.
