Is hell-fire preaching good or bad?

Who is to say whether so-called hell-fire preaching is good or bad. If it is the message appointed by the Spirit of God to be preached at that time, it must serve some purpose.

If it is intended to "scare" some people into heaven, I assure you it won't work anymore than preaching about God's love......preach...that by all means some might be reached.

Cheers,

Jim

To me, a steady diet of it would get old. There's so much more in the Bible to preach than "turn or burn."

It depends on how hell-fire preaching is presented. Hell-fire preaching presented with compassion and love can be good. However, I have heard too many preachers enjoy telling people they are going to hell. They may call it under the anointing or righteous indignation, but getting satisfaction out of telling people they are going to hell is in the wrong spirit.

You don't need to know much about theology to do hell-fire preaching.

Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, did it right.

Don't know if I ever seen a preacher enjoy telling someone they going to hell. When I get on it I preach there are two places that will hold the whole human race and one is Heaven and the other eternal punishment.

Depends which end you are on. :) Hot or just right.

AMEN Bro Bob, if it's in the bible I preach it. Of course I'm not worried, I've already made reservations in the name ofr Jesus.

I like the both answer too. My mom was a pastor's kid who became a Christian because of a fear of hell. While I think this is not a good reason to become a Christian, God has done amazing things in her life since. And fortunately she doesn't see the message of grace to be simply about hell-avoidance anymore.

I would also add that there is nothing in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John that preaches turn or burn. And there is very little in the rest of the NT that teaches turn or burn.

So for all those who say they are NT churches and also preach hellfire and brimstone sermons, where do they get that sermon concept from biblically?

The NT does talk about hell and the suffering there. But when it comes to repentance in the NT, it is with respect to what one is turning towards. And the turning away is from the bondage of sin. I don't recall any passage about turning away from eternal damnation in hell. But I could be wrong.

Brother Bob, I may have misinterrupted what hell-fire preaching is. Sorry that I didn't explain myself. My memory of hell-fire preaching is some evangelistic meeting where the evangelist tries to scare people into getting saved and/or revived by getting excited and raising his voice.

When he was done, a perceptive person could tell he was satisfied by thinking "I really told them". It was a way of elevating himself over others. I doubt that such an evangelists would be interested in posting on this BB.

I didn't mean to imply that people on here would be like that.
Having explained my impression of hell-fire preaching, I will list my post again.

Matt 10 "Do not FEAR those who kill the body but then can not kill the soul - rather FEAR Him who is able to DESTROY BOTH body and soul in hell fire".

Rev 14:10 "And they will be TORMENTED with fire and brimstone in the presence of the lamb and the presence of His holy ones".

Question - is GOD a preacher of hell fire and damnation?

Was NOAH a preacher of "hell fire and damnation" in his day?

Should we NOT warn the wicked of the impending doom for those who reject salvation?

In Christ,

Bob

Eze 3:18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

Eze 33:6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.

Having said that -- there is the "down and ugly" side of this that sometimes does get preached "sinners in the hands of an Angry God" style -that is not supportable from the Bible and drives sinners away from the monster-god that it depicts.

Both ditches are wrong. To either refuse to preach the word as it warns of the fires of hell - the 2nd death. on the one hand --- vs the dark-ages notion of an evil monster-god enjoying the torment of the 12 year old victim writhing in the flames for all eternity.

Both ditches are bad.

in Christ,
Bob

warning people of the wrath to come is not hell-fire and brimstone preaching.

warning people of the wrath to come (along with the law) is preaching the key to salvation.
