Is it wrong to buy sandwiches from a bar?

Gossip is not the question, gb.

The Bible plainly says to abstain from the appearance of evil. Not just the appearance, but all appearances. Being seen going in and out of a beer or liquor store is an appearance of evil.

The christian is told to refrain from it. Period
How can it be an appearance of evil when there is nothing evil about going into a bar?

How can it not be gossip, unless you assume that a person is going into a bar for evil purposes?

MK,

how about letting the scripture decide. Proverbs 23:20 tells us be not among winebibbers
Actually, when taken in context, that passage says not to participate with them in drunkenness.

I will answer your question with my opinion.

I do believe he would, but the sandwich I think would have been secordary, I believe he would have gone in to witness to unbelivers and sinners, which is what Gina suggested I believe.

Go in for the food, but while you're there make good use of the time witnessing to people.

Actually, I think that Jesus might enjoy a good beer with His sandwich. Of course, He would never get drunk! </font>[/QUOTE]Why don't we let Jesus speak for himself:

Matthew 11: 18-19 - "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'"

[qb] I know this may seem like a silly, trivial, question, but here goes.
The town that I live in does not have any restaurants, or fast food places. The only place to get sandwiches is at the local bar.
I don't drink, and have had alcohol abuse by a sister in the past.
My wife and daughter think it is okay to call and order take-out sandwiches from the bar, and take them home to eat.

I am not comfortable ordering food from a bar. Even though we are not ordering, or drinking liquor, I feel that it affects our Christian witness.
I would like your opinions about this. Am I being too sensitive, and reading something into this that isn't there, or what? Thanks.

Rob
If there is only the one place to order sandwiches, doesn't everybody in town know that?

Are there others who sometimes get sandwiches and no liquer? What is your gut feeling about them - do you mentally condemn them or give them the benefit of the doubt?

If you give them the benefit of the doubt, then you should give your wife, daughter and yourself the "benefit of the doubt" as well and just not worry about it.

Gina asked if I'd found an answer to my question. Yes, I did, but not without the invaluable help of all my Brothers and Sisters on BB who so very graciously gave of their valuable time to share their experiences, and wisdom with me.

Pastor SBC1303 posted that I would receive many different opinions on this issue, and as usual, he was so very right. He also recommended that I pray about my dilemma, which I did, and I also prayed after reading each post that was received.

I realized that I was being too judgemental, and not giving others the benefit of the doubt. Paul of Eugene hit the nail square on the head with his post.

I was so worried about how it would look to others about me going into the bar, that I didn't take into account that they go to the bar for food too. I'm spending some time on my knees, asking Jesus to to help me to get rid of my legalistic outlook.
"I thank my God upon every rememberance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;"

Thanks to everbody for your experience, guidance, and wisdom. If I can't come to Jesus, and my Brothers and Sisters for help with a problem, then I won't find answers to my problem.

Well, it's not a sin, not necessarily an appearance of evil, and not necessarily a bad witness. My wife and I have from time to time visited a local sports bar & grill for lunch or during special sporting events, and done so with other church members. However, I agree withh Joseph B's original post. If you are not comfortable with it, then don't do it. You have every right not to and should feel no shame for it. You cannot be judged for your personal conviction, and, so long as you're not judging anyone else according to your personal conviction, you're not acting unrighteously.

But, you see John, I WAS judging others according to my personal conviction, and I was convicted of it.

It's not a pretty sight when you see yourself as a Legalist, especialy when the evidence is staring you in the face.

Thankfully, Jesus is merciful with His wayward children.

I applaud you for loking at yourself with objectivity. Of course, we should refrain from judging others according to personal conviction, but you are indeed welcome to, and I encourage you to, adhere to your own personal conviction for yourself, whatever that may be.

God bless, FoG.

Thankful

There are many restaurants that have bars in them or an area to buy alcohol. Eating in these places are not wrong. I can see nothing wrong with getting sandwiches at the ONLY place in town that offers food to eat.

I would think that most people in your town know that this is the ONLY place to get sandwiches.

We can try, but we cannot control what other people think.

I believe that 1 Thessalonians 5:22 means to avoid evil.

Abstain from every form of evil NKJV

We are to abstain from every hint of false teaching or disobedience.

What kind of message are you giving to the lost who see you in the bar. The see you not getting drunk, not drinking, and being a nice friendly guy. If you pray about it and are not tempted tow drink be a witness just by your actions.
