Is Polygamy Sanctioned by God?

Funny. I've studied Chinese for quite some time and can say that no such character exists. However, it is true that one woman under a roof in Chinese means 'peace' (an), so that two women under a roof, if such a character existed, might possibly mean 'double peace'

Why that's unamerican, the women bring peace? I should send my wife to China for peaceful training but the Chineese men may hate me by the time she leaves... Forget peace, hit him wit a skillet that'll get him off that couch...

Society then was very different than it is now. They had no law and order like we have today. It was not unusual for one group to raid the other group, kill all the men and take the women as slaves or wives. If the men were not killed, they were sold off as slaves. This resulted in more available women than men. I have no scripture to support this, but this is generally acknowledged as a historical fact.

I doubt if anyone on here believes that polygamy is okay today. The question is: Was it okay back then? I believe it was okay back then; the same as slavery, concubines, avengers of murder, etc. However, I don't know of any polygamy condoned after the Jewish exiles returned.

Consider this. God's people, the twelve tribes chosen to be holy, were the product of polygamy and concubines. If God considered polygamy to be bad back then, would He have chosen a people produced through two wives and two concubines? I think God accepted polygamy as necesary for the times and conditions.

Sorry, but I got so busy in my ministry that I had to abandon the BB for awhile.

The above post shows what I mean - there are people here who defend polygamy, even if only for the past.

I don't think concubines were ever approved of by God, but that's another issue.

Just because polygamy existed does not mean it was sanctioned by God. God chose many kind of people. Moses and David were both murderers but he used them.

As usual, the thread devolved into jokes.

No one has shown from scripture, imo, that God sanctioned polygamy.

On this subject there is an old joke that a Mormon and Mark Twain were debating this issue, and the Mormon asked Twain to disprove polygamy from the Bible.

Whereupon Twain replied that Jesus said no man can serve two masters.

Also, didn't the Oak Ridge Boys sing that trying to love two women is like a ball and chain?

It's amazing how many things we like to tag with "approved by God" just because something good comes out of it. God probably far more often works inspite of us.

God works through all kinds of cultures. This does not mean He sanctions them. He provided one wife for Adam, but the fact that David, Solomon, and many others had more than one wife did not prevent Him from working through them, either.

What God allows, and what His Perfect Plan is are two very different things!

As to Christians being brides of Christ, that is not what the Bible says at all.
It says the Church is the bride of Christ. Singular.
The Church is the Body of Christ, the fullness of Christ, Ephesians 1:23. In 1 Thessalonians 4:17 we find we will be with Him forever, so we are connected with Him for eternity. But in this we now being the Body of Christ, we are of the Bridegroom.

Can we find in the Bible that the "Body of Christ Church" is His Bride? Is there not another "Church", a church of covenant with promises made?
