But he is speaking expressly to those ALREADY saved. It isn't dealing with salvation but relational for we can still sin as beleivers (children of God) sin simply means to miss the mark or to fall short of the expectation.
Beleivers will not be judged eternally on our sin with regard to salvation as that debt has already been paid. But the consequences of our disobedience is an impared relationship with the Father. He is encouraging people not to assume you have already arrived or that now whatever you do - sin has no consequence to you OR worse yet that now you are above or can not sin.
Since John keeps speaking of "we" constistantly implying that he is also within the "we" and the then goes on and states in Chapter 2 My children (regarding spiritual offspring) He is stating that even we as beleivers still are not sinless and anyone who makes such a rediculous claim IS NOT OF GOD - There goes Oral Roberts
I might be reading you wrong but from where I sit, (and to me alone) it sounds like you are saying this verse is pertaining to the saving of a person only.
