is Sin an action or a substance

Of course sin is the violation of the Law. Nobody denies that. However, that says nothing about the NATURE of that violation. You can be a MURDERER by actually taking the physical life from something. You can be a MURDERER by the words that come out of your mouth. You can be a MURDERER by the attitude or state of mind. You can be a MURDERER by the CONDITION OF YOUR HEART.
The Bible says that heart "IS" desperately wicked, not merely the heart is responsible for DOING desperately wicked things. CAn't you understand that? The word "IS" is a STATE OF BEING verb.
No, it is not always a noun, although the noun can be descriptive of a STATE OF HEART or STATE OF MIND or descriptive of a fallen nature from which all ACTIONS are derived.
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

BTW I am not arguing one way or the other.
IMHO because God made the creation, including, Adam, subject to vanity, lust was inherent in the creation and lust brought forth sin which brought forth the death.
I would vote, substance.

How in the world can "lust" be substance? How can an attitude be "substance"? Angels sin but there is no substance as they are immaterial in nature.
People are welcome to debate whatever their hearts desire, but I have never seen a dumber topic.
I agree, but apparently there are those on this forum who really believe that sin is a substance, and others who restrict it solely to an action denying there is such a thing as a "sinner" except when committing sinful acts.

First it is not transmitted through human flesh. Jesus was human with flesh and blood yet without sin. As to what sin is it is unbelief or to say the lack of faith that is willfully carry out in thought, word or deed.
Romans 14:23
He that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
May I add that just because we believe something is alright with God it does not make it faith. We have to be able to back up our belief with God's word or to say what we believe has to be resting or based on His word either from direct wording or from principle of scripture. Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

You have given one of several Biblical definitions of sin. 1 John 2:6 is also a definition of sin. Another definition of sin would be coming short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), and thus the wrong heart motive behind what you say and do is sin (1 Cor. 10:31).
The Bible gives several definitions of sin, because sin is not simplex but complex involving much more than mere actions, but attitude as well as the CONDITION of your heart. For example, no one comes into this world with a believing heart, and so the heart we are born with is in a STATE of unbelief. In regard to motive it is in a state or condition of SELF-CENTEREDness, instead of God-centered.
You are right that sin is not "physical flesh" or substance. However, the transmission of the sinful nature from father Adam, is not through flesh. Man is more complex in nature than just "flesh" or material but also has an immaterial or spiritual nature as part of human nature. The sin nature is passed down through the male gender ("by one man sin entered...passed......through one man's offence many were made..." - Rom. 5:12,15,19), that is why Jesus did not have a human father and only a human mother.
The ROOT of sin is the human heart, and that is the object of God's creative work in new birth (Ezek. 36:26; 2 Cor. 3:3). It is the heart that is defect (Deut. 5:29; 29:4).
Jer 17:9 The heart IS deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
The word "is" is a STATE OF BEING verb. This is the CONDITION or STATE of the heart of fallen mankind and that is why Jesus said "there is NONE GOOD but one and that is God." The Greek term "good" translates "agathos" which refers to INTRINSIC goodness. No fallen man has intrinsic goodness because their heart IS evil, and thus they are sinners by NATURE or by CONDITION of heart and that is why "evil thoughts" and all ACTIONS of sin PROCEED FROM THE HEART, because the heart IS sinful.
