I grew up immersed in rock music and lots of other music. At least for me, listening to that music did not seem to lead me to accepting the devil's agenda, at least overtly.

It was only after I became a believer that I came to know so many other dimensions of that music that I did not know anything about as an unbeliever.

    Yes, not overtly.
Do you remember any of that music or its lyrics?
If you do then it is still in your mind.

You may even have acted on some of its suggestions in your BC days.
Like (can't quote it for sure):

If you can't be with the one you love,
(you got to) love the one you're with.

    That is cheating, right?
No, not for the devil, it's acting on the suggestions of his followers.

Of course, I have many of those accursed lyrics embedded in my mind and can recognize very quickly the instrumental aspects of that music. I did not say that music did not have any effects on me; it just did not lead me overtly into Satanism or anything else that is overtly demonic like that.

Yes, the devil is the most cunning being in the universe. Apart from total reliance upon God and what He has revealed in Scripture, we are no match for the devil.

The only hope that we have that he will not succeed in deceiving us in the realm of music is to immerse ourselves in everything that God has said in the Bible and allow His Word to determine everything that we believe.

The devil is the highest created angelic being that God has ever made. As the anointed cherub, he was a musical being (Ezek. 28:13-14):

Ezekiel 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Other angelic beings, who are lesser than the devil, are musical beings who play musical instruments:

Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

    Revelation 8:7 The first angel sounded . . .

Given what God has revealed, I wonder how Christians who deny that some instrumental music is the devil's music can hold such a position.

I cannot say that this IS devil music, but some that I've heard from "praise" bands is so raucous that if I were forced to listen for more than a few minutes I honestly believe I would start destroying stuff just as an involuntary reaction to this garbage!!
So, as far as I'm concerned, while it may or may not be "devil" music, it's effects on me were from the devil!!

What are you referring to with the word "this" in your first sentence: "I cannot say that this . . ."?

Anything called "devil music" is created by man. No instances in Scripture of Satan creating any music.

Do you deny the passages that show that angels play musical instruments?

Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

    Revelation 8:7 The first angel sounded . . .

Do you deny that Ezekiel 28 is speaking of the devil as the anointed cherub and speaks of musical instruments that were prepared for him:

"this" = "some that I've heard from "praise" bands"

That's what I thought you meant, but I was not sure. Thanks for confirming what you were saying.

Still, no music in Scripture created by Satan, & there certainly isn't any of his created music here now. Today's evil music is man-made.

How do you know that "there certainly isn't any of his created music here now"? How do you know that "today's evil music is man-made"?

    No Scripture saying it is.

I simply do NOT believe there's any inherently-evil melody without words around. You haven't presented anything to change that belief.
(BTW, my congregation places next-to-no weight on music.)

You have not provided any evidence from Scripture to support your beliefs. You are entitled to have your opinions, but they do not carry any weight if you do not have any evidence to support them.

As for your congregation's placing "next-to-no weight on music," what does that mean?

I’ve been told that some of our old classic hymns repurposed tavern tunes.

In the same vein, as a teen our youth group was given the task of repurposing popular songs to the lyrics of ‘Amazing Grace’.
The winner used ‘Take Me Out To The Ball Game’.

Scott Aniol does a good job of addressing this issue: Did Luther use tunes from love songs?

Note especially his response (in the comments to this article) to someone who asked about "the bar tunes" that Luther used.

I was thinking of Fanny Crosby.

Music is in the ear of the beholder.

Far eastern music is quite foreign to our ear.
African music can be quite distinct.
In some cultures synchronized singing is unusual.

I imagine God takes pleasure in any kind of music that honors him.
And abhors that which turns one away from him.
