I e-mailed IBS and they referred me to Zondervan as the source of the grade levels on the different Bibles. I've e-mailed Zondervan three times and have gotten these two answers:
Zondervan used the services of the Swinburne Readability Laboratory to establish reading grade level of its Bibles.
Our Bible department says Bible translation measurement is too complicated for the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. They say Swinburne uses a more comprehensive methodology.
I ran a Yahoo search and couldn't find a site for Swinburne. I would like to know Swinburne's methodology, but I would lean toward agreeing that Flesch-Kincaid is not sufficient for Bible comparisons. I haven't yet received responses to e-mails sent to school personnel, and this thread will probably be closed before I hear from them. It is T.A.K.S. week here in our schools, and it is a nightmare. I think it's not really for the school testing the students, but rather for the state to test the schools!

My reply:
You don't need any bible to get saved. All that is required is an understanding of the plan of salvation. This can be explained with out any particular version of the bible even being present.

You say:
You must not be much of a soul winner.

My reply:
I should be offended by this personal attack, but Iv'e come to expect it from people like you. You do not have any idea about my soul-winning capability. I guess the difference is I don't carry them around like fish on a stringer so I can brag about how much I do for the Lord. Seems like one of the things God hates is pride!

You say:
I hit it every week. I've led many people to Christ and all with a KJV. I don't sit and reason and give them the phsycology junk. I simply show them Jesus Christ dying for their sins. Any man or woman that tells me they have to use some man made book to lead a child to Christ is not honest.

My reply:
I, I've, I, I. In such a short statement you refer to yourself four times. There's that pride thing again!

You say:
But I tell you what will matter, when you convince them to get down and repeat a prayer because you gave them mans reasoning and told them they could go to heaven and they just said why not and repeated after you but didn't get a HEART felt conviction and die and go to hell thinking they are OK>>>> All because you didn't use the word of God.
I'm KJV only but I'll say this...There is enough left of the Bible in a NIV, NKJV to lead a man to Christ, but the LIV isn't even a translation. Its a paraphrase with dirty language in it.

My reply:
First you say that a KJV is required for salvation to occur, then you say it isn't. Even the KJV says, "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." James 1:8

I never said that if the KJV was written today, it would be at a 4th grade reading level, I said that when it was written it was written at a 4th grade reading level. This is very different.

All those inter-net tests for determining readablitiy can only apply to what is considered that reading level by today's standards. And since that isn't anything like what I said to spark this topic, it has no practical application to discount it.

I think if anyone paid attention to the subtle difference from what I actually said and what they thought I said...it wouldn't have amounted to a 6 page discussion in the first place.

Now, if someone can find a test for reading level that took place in the era of which the KJV was written.....
