Is the Jewish Sabbath on Saturday?

I was talking to a Pentecostal the other day.

He stated that the Lord never commanded that any particular day must be observed as the Sabbath.
He further mentioned that as long as you observe at least one day per week - you are fine from a Scriptural point of view. He further stated that it was the Pharisees who demanded that the Sabbath had to be on Sat.

So what are your thoughts about the OT Sabbath -
and the thinking of this Pentecostal Pastor?

NOTE: This is NOT a discussion of what day that Christians are to observe as a Holy Day - or if Christians are to observe the Sabbath at all.

I don’t think we use the same calendar as ancient Israel. The Jews knew “first day, last day”, I don’t think they were named beyond Sabbath as last day of the week.

The Pentecostal Pastor is biblically ignorant… a really bad trait for a pastor.

Reminds me of a old hymn “ant it a shame”

“Ant it a shame you’re drinking (smoking, lying, stealing etc) on Sunday when you got Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (etc), any it a shame you’re (doing it) on Sunday”

God wants us focused on Him 24/7.

When this pastor mentioned this to me - I wasnt sure how to answer .
Granted - is it we just assume that Sat is to be the Sabbath as that is the Day that God rested.

The Hebrews counted their days from sundown to sundown.

Well, I suppose we have to take the Hebrews word for it. I believe God instructed Moses of the correct day after they came out of Egypt. This seems reasonable since God told them to keep the Sabbath holy.

The priests would then have the responsibility to keep count of the Sabbath as well as all other Holy days according to the Law. A simple matter of mathematics I suppose. Since violation was punishable by death, they were extra motivated to get it right. They also produced extensive records (relatively speaking) of activities in the Temple.

We have to trust an unbroken accounting of Sabbaths and other Holy days throughout Jewish history, and then integration into various calendars that came along. I think the one we use now was developed by Pope Gregory (or during his time as Pope) and is called the Gregorian calendar.

I’ve actually thought about this before, especially during the deportation into Babylon How did the Jews manage to keep their calendar accurate? I can only surmise the devoted priests were vigilant.

Lucky for us, salvation doesn’t hinge on getting the day right.

No where does it so state but what is stated.

Just a thought without any research, for the seventy weeks of Daniel to have any truthful meaning relative to the truthfulness of the word of God would not the seven day concept with the following of Remember the Sabbath day as here stated : [
‘Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. ‘It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”] need to be unbroken from creation? From evening and morning were the first day.

Every seventh day from creation has been a Sabbath in order for the seventy weeks of Daniel to have any truthful meaning even unto;
there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God, Hebrews 4:9
4:9 ἄρα ἀπολείπεται σαββατισμὸς τῷ λαῷ τοῦ θεοῦ

All of the names of the days are of Satanic origin. IMHO

I think the Pentacostal preacher is confusing Colossians 2:16-23 with the Old Covenant.

It is not hard to figure out. Days 1-7 are mentioned many times in Scripture. Evening & morning has already been answered. When we say Jesus rose on the first day of the week, that is the day after the 7th day or Sabbath day. We recognize the first day of the week as Sunday. So Saturday is the 7th day of the week. Though different calendars may be used or the the names of the week are different, they still represent the 7 days of the week. I am not going to go into the finer nuances of the 'special' (Jn 19:31) Sabbath days of the festivals or the 8th day Sabbath symbolism (Lev 23:33; circumcised on the 8th day, etc.).

The Biblical observed Sabbath Day begins the evening/after sunset following the sixth day per the Law as given in Exodus 20:11. That Pentecostal Pastor is giving an interpretation on how he thinks the Sabbath as moral Law could be observed.

Was a 7th day Sabbath tbat occurred during the 7 days of feast, Numbers 28:17-25 the the days of 15-21are explained. The 15th being the day of the crucifixion Joseph had to wait for sundown get Jusus body, Mark 15:42, Numbers 28:18.
