But they did get a New Testament in a different language than what was spoken. I think this may have been because they (the whole initial audience of the New Testament) DID need a different language (it was written in Koine Greek, the common everyday language).
I am sure God could have taught all of them Hebrew. He could make us understand Hebrew as well.
Perhaps there is more to God using the everyday common language (instead of a more eloquent and percise Greek) than many identify.
The Jews have their own language and when they are addressed in a different tongue it is a sign from God that they are under his disciplinary judgement.
The Jews national language is Hebrew.
Isaiah 36:13
Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews'
language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Principles are established through languages. Consider this passage from the KJV.
1 Cor 14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people (Israel); and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not (see V 21 - it was Isael who did not believe in this context) : but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Paul would say to Jews later in Acts 28:
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
Companion passages:
Zephaniah 3:1-3
Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God. Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.
V4- 5
The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.
This pretty much describes Judah with her capitol city of Jerusalem during the days of Jesus Christ on earth, but there is hope because in the same chapter, he says this:
8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD,
until the day (that would be the day of the LORD) that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
9 For then (at that time) will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
"pure" language in this sense is meant to convey the fact that all his peaple Israel will speak one language and it will be Hebrew.
God just wants people to believe him. He does not say the same things to every people. For instance, in this chapter he says one thing to Israel and one thing to the nations in the same context and with a different result.
This chapter tells of the next time Jesus is in their midst on earth. Check it out.
14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
15 The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.
16 In that day (the day of the LORD) it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.
17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
18 I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
19 Behold,
at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.
20
At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for
I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.
I may not have done a good job of responding to your post and I am sorry about that but I took the opportunity to say some good stull and exalt the word of God that is preserved for us in the KJV from where I got it, having confidence that every word will be meticulously fulfilled literally.
Many people do not understand these prophecies though they have scores of new bibles with different words to describe them. Why new Bibles if they don't help?? This current age is the time God takes away Israel's national identity and thier national language and saves the remnant as gentiles lest they all perish.
That is my reasoning and belief and the wisdom of God..
