Is this Bush's fault too?

Why are these buses sitting in this parking lot. If New Orleans knew the hurricane was coming but they said people didn't have cars to leave maybe they could have used these buses.

One method for dealing with Katrina:

---

Repeat after me:

"Bush hates us all. Bush hates us all. Bush hates us all."

Follow instructions until you believe it.

----

Seriously, though, the blame over this would go more to local leaders if any blame existed.

Nevertheless, I wonder if there would have been time to do the following:

1. Find credentialed drivers and get them to pick up people (even with the hurricane gov't gets in the way!)

2. Notify the people

3. Convince the people to get on the buses

---

My lingering suspicion is that all available drivers would already "gotten out of Dodge."

How far awar from the ocean was this parking lot? Most people didn't expect the levees to break (lake side) so they might have been parked there for "safety." I don't know whether they could be used standing in that much water.

The lack of planning for the hurricane was the local government's fault. I understand the federal government was in charge (correct me if I am wrong on this) of building a levee strong enough to withstand a level 3 when they knew a level 4 or 5 was going to come. That was their fault. Once we figured out that NO wasn't prepared, and folks were sleeping on bridges and drowning in the water for 4 to 5 days, the lack of response was the federal government's fault. There is plenty of blame to go around. DEMS need to not make this a political issue too quickly as they certainly bear some blame. On the other hand, Republicans need to stop defending the indefensible and being defensive of the president when even he admits the response was not adequate. The bottom line for me is that we can take care of folks all over the world in their time of need, but when it is our own, we dropped the ball. As a Bush supporter, I am not going to defend that just because he is my guy.

Yeah, it was Bush’s fault. Bush should’ve known that the Mayor of NO and the Governor were both inept to handle such a situation without needing their hands held.

I have commented on other threads about the middle management bureaucrats protecting their turf. This may be the reason 20,000 trailers that could be used for shelter are being held in Atlanta by FEMA.

I was in Pensacola last week visiting my sister, and I was astonished that there are STILL FEMA cities in vacant lots of buildings that were destroyed and houses with the "blue roofs" that have not been repaired.

FEMA must have a HUGE stockpile of these trailers. The company that produces them must be rolling in the dough because we all know how much the government spends on things. :D

Bush cut the funds in June 2005. That is hardly enough time to blame this levee break on Bush.

A) The war isn't illegal. B) Are you making this comparison as it relates to the genuinely illegal wealth redistribution that has been going on for the past 70 years?

Why does the Federal gov't under Bush or anyone else bear the responsibility for building the levee system for one city? Why should Minneapolis pay for its own snow removal and to rebuild NO's after that cities leadership failed to do it's job... for year after year.

The mayor's greatest contribution here was to start pointing fingers. His city was not prepared to evacuate its people. He didn't order an evacuation until 24 hours before the storm hit. He didn't ensure that the levees were upgraded. He didn't provide for law and order after the storm. He didn't ensure that police and emergency services had reliable back up communications.

I don't want to take away from the tragedy this is... but the false accusations have to be answered. Bush has some responsibility. But the primary responsibility has to lie with the mayor and governor.

Is Bush responsible for emergency planning for every city in America? That is way too much. The locals have to do their job. Blanco and the mayor don't seem to have done theirs at all.

He also failed to mobilize the government in time.
According to an article I read today by someone who had trained with FEMA, the local authorities have to develop and execute a plan to incorporate local, state, and federal resources. The NO and La plans were so poor that FEMA had to develop their own on the fly while the administration dealt with an incompetent governor who wouldn't relinquish control of the operation to the Feds.

The more info that comes out, the less it appears that Bush bears a major responsibility in these response failures. The Feds simply had to overcome the gross incompetence of this mayor and governor before they could have an impact.

I agree with, ScottJ. Excellant post, in fact. If the locals are not doing their job, which is taking care of THEIR city instead of waiting for D.C. to do it, why in the world do they get a paycheck? It seems like people don't mind taking the check, they just do not want to work for it.

You will probably get slaughtered for the post, but I feel you are correct.

Riverm,

Even if President Bush knew - he couldn't have done anything about it. The people of LA voted for their leaders.

Just as serious, the President’s priorities, his indifference to questions of infrastructure and the environment, magnified an already complicated disaster. In an era of tax cuts for the wealthy, Bush consistently slashed the Army Corps of Engineers’ funding requests to improve the levees holding back Lake Pontchartrain. This year, he asked for $3.9 million, $23 million less than the Corps requested. In the end, Bush reluctantly agreed to $5.7 million, delaying seven contracts, including one to enlarge the New Orleans levees. Former Republican congressman Michael Parker was forced out as the head of the Corps by Bush in 2002 when he dared to protest the lack of proper funding.

Similarly, the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which is supposed to improve drainage and pumping systems in the New Orleans area, recently asked for $62.5 million; the White House proposed $10.5 million. Former Louisiana Senator John Breaux, a pro-Bush Democrat, said, “All of us said, ‘Look, build it or you’re going to have all of Jefferson Parish under water.’ And they didn’t, and now all of Jefferson Parish is under water.”

Once again, why is Bush responsible to be the mayor and governor of NO and La?

Bush has not been indifferent to the environment by the way. I deal with those issues for my company. Liberals think that someone is "indifferent" or "against" the environment if they don't cozy up to the environmental whackos or behave hostile to business. The Administration's policies seek to build more partnerships and focus on mutual benefits.

Does this writer actually contend that there is a direct link between this tragedy and the Bush tax cuts? Liberal deception at its best.

Liberals weren't crying out for building infrastructure instead of cutting taxes. They wanted more social spending/engineering.

None the less, the city and state have the primary responsibility here. You don't think this could have been funded through a bond issue?

The $35 million bond program used to pay for the University of Missouri's new basketball and sports complex would stand as one proof against you.

People have to start taking responsibility for themselves, their cities, and their states... and stop waiting on the Feds to do everything for them.

I return to my earlier example. Why should the Feds pay for NO's levees but not Minneapolis' snow removal?

Maybe... hopefully... that was because Bush realized that it wasn't "proper funding". The city and state should have footed the bill.

Similarly, the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which is supposed to improve drainage and pumping systems in the New Orleans area, recently asked for $62.5 million; the White House proposed $10.5 million. http://www.newyorker.com/printables/talk/050912ta_talk_remnick </font>[/QUOTE]Same story... same answer. If the problem was known and local officials did nothing to correct it then they shouldn't be pointing the finger at Bush now.... at least he did something... while they apparently did virtually nothing except wait on the Feds to fix everything for them and whine.
