We seem to be missing something. The country called "Israel" is not the same thing as the biblical nation of Israel.

The Nation of Israel is the people, not the land.

If you don't already know, I am pretrib, premill in my theology.

I do not hate Israel. I just don't pretend that they are currently God's people. God still has a future for them. He does not wink at their disobedience though.

Sheeagle, God's covenant with Abraham is not the same thing as God's covenant with Israel. People seem to think that the church serves or is a lower position than Israel.

Btw, I do not subscribe to replacement/covenant theology.

Here's what the Word says: Romans 11:23-33

23 And they also (Israel), if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.
29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Has anyone considered the possibility that part of the country Israel's problems might be that it did not respect the borders of its neighbors?

I can only speak personally, but no, that possibility has not occurred to me. In 1947-8, the Jewish people of Palestine accepted the Peel Commission compromise, and also accepted the UN Partition Plan. Both were rejected by the Palestinian Arab leadership, who followed up that rejection by starting a war. In the middle of that war, there was a truce brokered by the Red Cross. At the time, the Jewish forces had lost most of what the Partition Plan had alloted them. Nevertheless, the Jewish leaders agreed to extend the truce, which could have become permanent, but the Arab League rejected it and attacked. In this final stage of the 48 war, the Jewish forces went on the offensive.
In 67, Egypt violated the agreement with the Americans and UN and mobilised forces to destroy Israel. He blockaded Elait, and sent the UN troops out of Sinai. Israel responded by attacking Egypt, but sent messages to Jordan not to become involved. The Jordanians shelled Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and sent in ground troops against Jerusalem also. At this point, Israel joined the battle with them, and captured the West bank.
Under barak, Israel offered 96% of the West Bank and 100% of Gaza to the Palestinians, who rejected peace and initiated the current violence.
Israel is not perfect, but has sought peace with its neighbours.
    Take care, Colin

Then perhaps the problem is that they fail to respect the strangers within their gates.

As I said earlier, the country we call Israel today is not the same thing as the Nation of Israel in the OT. There are more Jews in the US than there are in Israel.

Hi Everybody! I just heard an hour long audio on this subject in which Dr. David Reagan tells of 20 points made in 2002 by Jeanne Kirkpatrick, William Bennett, and Jack Kemp in regards to Israel.

He also told of an open letter sent to President Bush and the press by 60 prominent evangelical leaders that made some insulting and distorted accusationa against Israel.

I believe that Israel, since 1948 has been in the first phase of the fulfillment of Ezekiel 36-39, having been given their land back but are yet in unbelief.

I asked on another thread what people believe a generation is: 40, 50, or 100 years. ;)

(sigh) No matter how many prophecies are being fulfilled right before our very eyes, some people just will not see....alas. :(

Can we really put all peoples together, thus making the Jews another part of the disobedient, not believing in Christ, and still not recognize them as chosen of God?

Take into consideration that if this promise, made to Abraham was for his seed to have the land that God promised them, then are we also to believe that the curse made on Canaan's descendants continue, and the promise of a nation of Ishmael's descendants to always be of the "wild man" type. For Japheth's descendants to dwell in the tents of Shem, and so forth.

The New Testament also refers to the Jews and gentiles with a promise of salvation to both, but still refers to them separately.

So, if they are no longer chosen above all, and are equal in Christ, with salvation, what is the purpose of a remnant to be carried thru, for the fulfilling of the promise for the land? What was the land promised to them for anyway, to have a place for the Savior to be born? Or, to give them the land to demonstrate the power God has with the use of this small nation? Could God have the promise of the land to continue for this purpose, aside from salvation?
