James Buchanan: Was This Man America's Worst President?

However, Buchanan set the stage. If he had done a proper job. Lincoln wouldn't have been in the position to do what he did. Remember, the Ft. Sumter affair started in December of 1860 long before Lincoln was sworn in. You are trying to simplify a complex situation. What was Lincoln supposed to do after South Carolina fired on the Fort?

I am not trying to minimize Lincoln's culpability. Only saying he's not the only one who took or didn't take the proper action. By focusing on Lincoln, one minimizes those persons North and South who precipitated the crisis. That includes Chief Justice Taney who led the SCOTUS in the Dred Scott decision which killed the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Depending on how far back you choose to lay guilt, all, ALL, crime/sin can go back to the very beginning of humanity.
This does not though, exempt the actual performer of the deed from personal guilt; otherwise our entire judicial system would be the envy of liberals - “sin” does not exist, only misguided motives that man can correct!!!???!!??

Measuring presidents is an interesting exercise. One method to measure them by is who has killed the most Americans.

Using this metric, Calvin Coolidge begins to rise to the top of the good list.

We all know the worst President was Donald Trump... :Whistling:Wink

Warren G Harding may have been a top 3 candidate since he had prostitutes in the White House.
