Well Chuck Norris is still with us, that’s what matters.
Back in the late 80"s, early 90"s I was responsible for removing femoral arterial lines from hospitalized patients after they had a coronary artery angioplasty.
It involved removing rather large-bore arterial and venous catheters from the groin region and applying pressure until hemostasis (clotting) occurred (about 25 minutes). It was wasn't a pleasant experience, mildly painful and once in a while a complication called a vagal reaction would occur (heart rate and blood pressure would drop).
A simple, easy solution was to distract the patient.
In the afternoons I'd turn the patient's television set to Jerry Springer and go about my work of removing the catheters.
HE NEVER FAILED ME! No one ever vagal'ed while watching his show.
