Jesse Ventura Won't See 'American Sniper'; Says Chris Kyle Is No Hero

King David is a hero. But he committed murder and adultery.

Samson is a hero. But he broke his vows.

Many others in the Bible are heroes, yet failed.

IMO, Kyle is a hero. Does that mean he was always upright, and always perfect? No.

I don't know if a Hollywood movie is a good basis for deciding if someone is heroic. The military record makes clear that they considered his acts heroic. I'm sure those he was shooting at had a different opinion about his actions. It seems the term hero is a bit fluid.

From his book, the exerts I've read, he does what many in the armed services do, try and show that he was just doing his job, following orders, like the other soldiers serving their country. Heroic, like all the other soldiers, is, from what I've read, how he would see things.

Disagree with you about Audie Murphy. His actions were very heroic, putting himself in great danger to save others. Not the same as a sniper hiding and shooting long range.

Wow.

Wow.

This might be the meanest, stupidest, most ignorant, and uninformed thing I have ever read.

And a guy who hides behind the anonymity of the internet said it.

I do not usually participate in threads where you are active. I recognize that we would differ in opinion, respect your right to so and comment accordingly. And then there is this comment cited above.

Let me answer your folly with your own signature, "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge." (Stephen Hawking)

It is obvious you have never served in the military, haven't a clue about tactics and know nothing about snipers and their role in combat. You were correct about the long distances and that is where the illusion of your knowledge ends. I am confident your choice of the word hiding was intentional. Hiding gives the impression of cowardice.

I don't expect you to run out and buy a Chris Kyle t-shirt and stand on a street corner waving an American flag but to call this man a coward obliquely is shameful and ignorant.

All military personnel are taught "concealment and cover" this is because no one stands toe to toe shooting at each other. The idea that a soldier being in hiding is somehow cowardice is just plain ignorant and absurd.

Truth is this is nothing more that a demonization tactic used by the absolute ignorant to tear down others to fill a political agenda. In other words politics has become the rule of the day and it is the very reason out vets have been left out in the cold.

Anyone who engages in such behavior is a low life piece of trash and I have no used for them.

Did anyone else notice that? The Rev just used a demonization tactic to tear Crabby down for using a demonization tactic to tear another down.

Snipers and their spotters have to wade DEEP into durka-durka territory. They pick off enemies. Each one they pick off is one less suicide bomber. I have no problems with it.

AND as long as our government insists on sending into urban warefare, sniping is better than obliterating entire cities and populations, right?

There are deeds done in a war that are heroic and many go unrecognized or unreported. Medics do many heroic deeds and receive little or no recognition for those deeds by the higher ups.

While a sniper may do "good things" from his army's point of view I do not see his deeds as heroic.

I cannot remember the title of the book, but there is an excellent read about a Russian and a German sniper who day after day try to outfox each other. I'll not tell you which came out alive.

Enemy at the Gates!!
