But when Peter used it in defense of Jesus He admonished him and put back on the soldier's ear.

That wasn't about self defense or defense of Jesus. It was about Peter getting in the way of the will of God for Jesus to go to the cross.

"Joh 18:11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?"

Having said that we do not want to overlook Christ's direction and warning to take appropriate provisions as they go into all the world.

"Luk 22:36 He said to them, "But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. "

I agree, well said.

Aren't we all like Peter all too often?

Yes, we must follow the Father's will, even if it means or own death. Remember Dietrich Bonhoeffer's prophetic words from "The Cost of Discipleship" .. that being a true desciple may cost a person their life.

BTW, thanks for opening a thread in the theology section that is not CvA or LS. It's the first interesting thread in this section in months!

I second that!

I have no idea what the point of this post was.

...........First, “loving your enemies,” like “turn the other cheek,” is a command for individuals in personal relationships. It is not a command for governments or for individuals put in grave bodily harm. As individuals we should pray for our enemies and “turn the other cheek” instead of returning insult for insult. Such behavior demonstrates supernatural love aimed at securing the offender’s conversion to Christ. But those commands do not mean that we have no right to personal self defense, nor do they mean that a nation shouldn’t protect its people from other hostile nations. .....

More Here

Context; I served 10 years on Active Duty prior to ministry.

Question; Are not the "individuals" killed by a bullet sent from the "individual" weapon of a person serving in the military who sends it via the pull of a trigger?

I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I think your logic begs this question and I am curious about your answer.

Good article. Good questions raised and solid points made. Least of all possible evils, I tend to agree. I question this kind of thinking largely based on a tension I see in Western Christianity between living a distinctly Christ-Kingdom kind of life and placing one's trust to fully in civil government and the fusion of the two.
