Jimmy Carter changing Baptist Religion

Huffington post interviews Jimmy Carter.

Tells us that Christian Fundamentalists are dangerous people - like Islamic
Ayatollah Khomeini and Pope John Paul II - and anyone who takes the Bible seriously.

" He and former President Bill Clinton attempted to realign the Baptist faith in a more liberal direction by calling for a new Baptist convention in 2008"
=========================================
When Raushenbush pressed him about whether he believed the Bible is God’s word, Carter answered, “the basic principles of the Bible are taught by God, but written down by human beings deprived of modern day knowledge. So there is some fallibility in the writings of the Bible. But the basic principles are applicable to my life and I don’t find any conflict among them.”

“There are many verses in the Bible that you could interpret very rigidly,” Carter said, “and that makes you ultimately into a fundamentalist.”
“Fundamentalists,” he wrote in his 2005 book Our Endangered Values, tend “to demagogue emotional issues” and “are often angry and sometimes resort to verbal or even physical abuse against those who interfere with the implementation of their agenda.” Carter applied this term to figures as divergent as the Ayatollah Khomeini and Pope John Paul II, to atheist neoconservatives and his fellow Baptists.

He contended the “mandated subservience of women by Christian fundamentalists” contributes to the Islamic practice ...

Carter wrote that he exchanged harsh words with the late Pope John Paul II during a state visit over what Carter classified as the Pope’s “perpetuation of the subservience of women.” He added, “there was more harshness when we turned to the subject of ‘liberation theology’.”
The former president, who has released recordings of the Sunday School classes he teaches and written previous books about the Bible, disassociated himself from the Southern Baptist Convention in 2000. He and former President Bill Clinton attempted to realign the Baptist faith in a more liberal direction by calling for a new Baptist convention in 2008. The formation of this new Baptist body, he wrote, constituted an “historic event for the Baptists in this country and perhaps for Christianity.”

This may be the part where Targus would insist that I blame all Baptists for anything Jimmy Carter does or says.

The day when the SBC starts following the advice of Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter is the day I remove myself from the SBC.

I see that my insistence on an answer to my question of "How do you know that Ellen White SPECIFICALLY is a prophet?" is getting to you.

Carter was a failure as a President, so he tries to be a successful theologian. He should stick to building houses.

I don't know if Carter is the worst President ever, but I do know that he is the worst ex-President ever!

The title of the thread is "Jimmy Carter changing Baptist Religion"...

However I failed to see anything even remotely related to that in the OP.

Keep in mind the Ryan is a 7DA - so to him us Baptists all look alike.

Jimmy Carter has no influence whatsoever among Baptists. Neither does Bill Clinton.
I may not agree with you on Carter. Thousands of folks flock to Plains to attend his Sunday School Class

Yep, and thousands follow Joel Osteen also; and as well, there were enough "thousands" to put the ZERO in office.

Doesn't speak too hopefully to our future, does it?

Keep in mind that your responding to Targus - to him all Seventh-day Adventists look alike.

The quote that I made - was a reference to the Targus model of taking any one Baptist and making them stand for all other Baptists - or at least doing so when it comes to Seventh-day Adventists.

I am just pointing out that it is not a model I use -- but there are those in the all-name-calling all-the-time camp that are indeed married to that method.

Good - BobRyan just told us what the actual topic of this thread is.

Let's get a little more clarification before we proceed.

So BobRyan, are you saying that I think that you are representative of all SDA?

If so - are you or are you not?

Or are you saying that I think that Ellen White's unique beliefs are representative of all SDA?

If so - is she or is she not?

Once we know exactly who it is that you are referring to we can begin a very interesting discussion.

Targus -- you are complaining that I am not using your own methods to claim that all Baptists are to be labeled as Jimm-Carter-Baptists? You frequently find this or that example from some SDA in a foreign country or a hospital in Hawaii in the 1970's or ... you name it -- to make your case.

I am simply saying that while I do not agree with everything that Baptists teach - and I certainly don't agree with Jimmy Carter - I know better than to assume that all Baptists are Jimmy-Carter or Bill-Clinton-baptists.

Bob

So you say... however the Washington Post newspaper article and several others document that ALL of the SDA hospitals perform thousands of abortions on demand.

But you dropped out of that discussion with no answer backed up by fact...

So why try to revisit it now?

BTW - I find this topic of yours to be quite ironic given that your supposed prophet Ellen White changed SDA doctrine every time one of her "prophesies" failed and she had to cover it with a new "vision".

I don't deny you your right to make stuff up and then look for anyone that will swallow the things you say no matter how devoid of fact.

I am sure that this action by Jimmy Carter and Clinton was an effort to reach out to certain types of people - possibly prone to making stuff up.

God gives to all - free will to choose as they will and let their fruits be seen.
