John Ashcroft Resigns as Attorney General

Not really surprised. He was a great one, even though hated by many people. The Muslims hate him for trying to protect our country. The liberal left hates him because he is a Christian, an ordained Assembly of God minister who is pro-life. Paranoid people hate him because of the Patriot Act which they misconstrue as denying us of our civil liberties. But God will be the final judge one day and I do believe He will say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

God has a different purpose for him now. He is my Brother in Jesus Christ, and I bid him Godspeed.

He is still a great man. From what I understand, he has some health issues that have been weighing pretty heavy on him and he wants to spend more time with his family. This is certainly commendable.

It sure wasn't meant to sound like a eulogy. I was sad when he lost the election in Missouri to a dead man - and I wrote him and told him I would be praying for him. The next thing that happened was his appointment to be Attorney General. I watched him sit there with the countenance of an angel, while he was grilled by a murderer on the Judicial Committee, and I prayed for him.

No eulogy. God has another plan for his life now and John Ashcroft has served his country well.

I'm sure the liberals are rejoicing.

He is stepping down as AG. Bush should nominate him for the upcoming Supreme Court vacancy.

LE,

I am surprised, only because I obviously misunderstood you as among those who have been anti-Ashcroft due to the PATRIOT Act.

FTR, you did misunderstand, I have never been anti-Ashcroft.

I have brought up the issue about the Patriot Act on the Board, though. Sometimes I just like to see what direction the apples are falling from the tree when I shake it.

Sometimes I like to get feedback.

Sometimes I just like to throw out something for people to think about - good, bad, and what if.

Not your fault. Sometimes what I put "out there" backfires, LOL.

But this is one thread where I'm serious. I believe him to be a great patriot and glad he is my brother in Christ. He is also quite an accomplished pianist.

A leading candidate to replace Ashcroft is former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson, who once ran the department under Ashcroft and faithfully implemented his policies.

Others likely candidates were White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, President Bush's election campaign chairman Marc Racicot and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Larry Thompson, who served as deputy attorney general until last year and is a personal favorite of the president, is leading candidate to replace Ashcroft, a Republican close to White House said. If appointed, Thompson, 58, would be first African-American to lead Justice... But Thompson recently became senior executive PepsiCo, and has indicated he is not interested.. Among other contenders are White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, who would be first Hispanic attorney general, and Marc Racicot, chairman of Bush's re-election effort. Former NYC mayor Giuliani and NY Gov. Pataki also on handicap lists of administration insiders... Developing...

Brother in Christ? Thats possible. American patriot? My definition of patriot must be different than yours LadyEagle. An American patriot in my mind is not someone that passes laws that undermine the constitution of the United States and then goes on tour to tell the country how wonderful the police state is going to be in protecting our freedoms. How can you protect freedoms by limiting them?

If he is indeed stepping down for medical reasons, I doubt he would consider such a position. His nomination would also face stiff opposition, similar to that endured by Robert Bork (actually - I think the opposition would mount a much more fierce offensive against the former AG).

I view John Ashcroft as an antiAmerican because of his attempt to subvert the Bill of Rights.

The liberals are not rejoicing because we expect his replacement to be more of the same.

I think Ashcroft is a good guy and means well. But I also think that the policies that he was implementing are dangerous. I wasn't too happy about the promotion of homosexual activism that he endorsed within the Justice Dept. But, it's a halmark of the Bush administration, he probably had to go along to keep his position.
