Did John The Revelator on the Isle of Patmos have complete understanding of the things revealed to him... Revelation 1:[1] The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

[2] Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

[3] Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Did he just see them and record them for future generations or did he understand what he recorded and saw?... Your thoughts?... Brother Glen

Ole Moses--when he was there fixin' to go into that Tabernacle and the Bible says that he "could not" go in--I believe that he was there "shakin' like a leaf in a tornado!" OOHHH!!! How he sensed the presence of the Almighty God!!

Ole John!!?? In Revelation 1--when he found out that the PRESENCE is a PERSON--and that that person was none other than the Son of Man--OOHHHH! He fell at the Son of Man's feet "as a dead man!" Now, we may say--"Ole John! He wasn't dead!!" Well, compared to the MAN whos feet he was at--he was!!

Other than that--Brother Glen--I just don't know!!

Maybe he did have an uderstanding of what he was able to see. Maybe some things can be relevant to a number of generations in a different way.

For example Jude wrote about things that were going on in the early church. Yet when reading Jude and comparing todays church it is like the book could have only been written last week.

I believe he did know what was meant by all the symbols, etc. I can't get over the words that indicate all these things were going to happen shortly. This was "at hand", "quickly", "soon" and more.

I think John knew who the antichrist was. As a matter of fact John is the only one that use the term antichrist.

But then I an not a premil guy I'm an ahmil guy and I am a partial preterist in my understanding. I'm still working on it.

I believe he did, and that J.N. Darby's influence has confused the matter.

I thought it was hard enough to determine the authorship of the Revelation without trying to determine if he knew all that he was writing beyond the first few chapters about the seven churches.

Same here amil... partial preterist... I agree with you and there are many on here who don't believe but that's OK... God will never leave any of his children behind!

John didn't never say to us that he understood what he was writing--he was just obedient in writing, that's all. Jesus told John to "Write" these things in a book--He never asked John nor do we have record as to Jesus tellin' John that he has to understand what he is writing--"Just write the thing, John!!"

I do believe this, though! John was banished to that Patmos island and there he died a Martyr's death in "slow motion!" I believe that somehow John knew that he wouldn't make it off that Island. He knew that he would one day die there. But I also believe that although he somehow knew that he would one day die on that island---that the words he was writing in obedience would live on and on and on until it finally "plops" down into the reader's(your) laps and you start reading and absorbing its contents.

You don't think he did... I must disagree as is implied by verse 9. I as a amil preterist feel it applied naturally and spiritually to those in the early church. Spiritually it applies to other churches representative of the seven churches in Asia in time. We are in the grace dispensation of time!... Brother Glen
