Joy of Broadband Internet

We went through many dial up providers before we decided to to go BB.We got tired of overloaded servers and changing access numbers.In the winter everytime the furnace started it would cause a signal on the phone line and we got the nice lady's voice:"Goodbye!"We went with Comcast (previously ATT.) and haven't been disapointed.My wife and I both have computers and have them connected through a router. I do a lot of research and composing on mine, and she does a lot of writing on hers. I also do a lot of digital photo work. It is so great to be able to be on at the same time!Our cost per month is now $52.00 (includes basic cable), but for the ability to use two computers it is worth it. Comcast has been working to upgrade the system and it seems to work well.Every once in a while the router needs to be re-booted(probably caused by a power dip or outage), but I can handle that!

Just signed on for cable and digital phone service from Cox. Neighbor has Cox and 2 to 3 times as fast as we were getting from Qwest DSL. It is coming up less expensive too. But I have decided to not add cable. If we do pay tv it will be sky angel.

 

Right now I am on BB, Crosswalk (for Scripture referencing), and listening to Christian music on oldchristianradio.com and page loading is no problem. I couldn't do that on dial-up. Gosh, people, if you haven't gone over to cable, do so now, no regrets. All you need to do is make sure you have a "cleaner", you know, a software that cleans up your intenet history, stored cookies, spyware, adware, and other stuff that can slow up your browser.

If you use a router and more than 2 computers, just have one IP address per pc, and refresh your router every now and then (reboot).

 

I have always wondered why "always on" is such a good thing. It seems to me that I would not want to leave my computer on all the time. It isn't really good for the computer (electrical spikes, heat, wear, etc.). I don't leave my TV on or my oven preheated, I don't leave my lights on or my car running. I like the idea of not having to logon and logoff everytime I want to connect to the net but, why leave the computer on all the time?

 

Was the exam hard? From what I was told the exam it mostly on software and not so much on the hardware is this true? I have the books at home but have been delaying my exam cause I don't have the memory that I use to and so that gives me no confidence for me to take the exam. Any insight?

 

I try not to leave my PC on all of the time, for the reasons you mentioned.

I have ADSL for $40, and loving it. My 56kb connection seemed to run at about 1kb/sec. I wanted to just get a cable connection, but none were offered in my area. I definately do not regret switching to broadband, and like others have said, I would not consider going back.

 

I love my high speed cable modem service. Having been a dial up user in the past, it would be hard to go back.

I pay 10.00 a month for cable and internet. Another benefit for being the cable guy.

 

Only four more days til I get my dsl installed!!!!!!!

OK, it's *all* youse guys's fault!

I bit the bullet and ordered DSL, too!

Turns out the 'pre-qualification' was to make sure that the lines to my house would support the data rate.

Should be installed by the end of the week.

For a 768K connect it's $50/month. With install and modem for free(?) first three months at half price.

I'll let you know how much 'Joy' is involved after I've used it a while.

I got hooked up early!!!! I downloaded a 22 mgeabyte file in 4 min. and 50 seconds. With dialup I would have started it and then gone to bed praying it would be done when I got up in the morning.

All of you just drive me nuts . Ya'll are wallowing in the good times, and I'm still riding that free AOL turtle. But as long as they want to give me free months, I guess I'll just have to ride it .

I would love to go broadband, but finances are the major obstacle here. If I went DSL through BellSouth, I have a friend who will give me a DSL modem for free! It's just that $45 a month that I shy away from (well, $35 a month for DSL Lite, but it's still more than the ole budget can handle right now). Charter is running a $29.99 special, but the rate is only good through April. Comcast is available, but it is $64.95.

Has anyone tried any of the souped-up dial-ups? Like NetZero Platinum, or Joi HiSpeed? I was just wondering if they are worth it. Iknow that download speeds are not increased, but I have read that websites just jump right on up. Please pass along any info.

Got our DSL Thursday. My 18 year old son hooked up the DSL modem to the line where our Internet Connection Sharing Computer's modem had been plugged in.

It connected immediately, once we got our password right.

Then the replacement computer wouldn't stay up. So my son hooked the upstream port on our 8 port switch directly to the DSL Modem and viola! Everybody in the house is up an running.

I love it!

Especially now that we don't need the 'sharing computer' we can pass it on.

And, no more multiple 'refreshes' to get to a site.

 

I am spoiled rotten on DSL and T1, and hate it when I don't have it.

 

512k ADSL coming this way in next couple of weeks. $AU100/month, but take off dialup access and call costs it will probably only work out about $40-50 more a month than what I am paying now....I'm sure I'll find the money somewhere

 

I LOVE IT!

I have been raiding webshots & imagestation for photos. Downloading 2MB pix like they are nothing. Over 40MB of new pix this afternoon and not having to worry about running into download limit. YEEEE-HA!

Cable and DSL services have helped bring broadband access to about 26.9 million Americans -- a significant increase from just a couple of years ago. But wireless services are expected to dramatically improve that growth.

I have charter cable internet service, $29 a month, work pays for most of it. I have a wireless router too, so the laptop can go anywhere in the house, or even the backyard. It is great, and I now go to my office less, only about once a month. I can either be at customer sites, or at home, and be much more productive.

There are wireless services available in some areas around here, but it is still spotty coverage.

My company is working with several telecoms to develop standards for security and access for next generation wideband wireless protocols, It will be the standard for broadband access within a few years. 2007 is probably not that unrealistic, as well as the conversion of all communications to wireless, using voice over IP for phone service.

 

I am trying to get broadband at work, and it isn't easy. We can not get DSL because we are too far from whatever it is you have to be close to, to get cable we would have to have an approx. 250 yard trench dug from the road to the building. That leaves sattilite and T1 access as the only real options. I don't know what the company will decide.

I have had DSL for four years and am considering cable. Cable used to be slow but now is much improved.
