Juneteenth

The original question was along the line of "Will your church recognize Juneteenth"

Yesteday at Grace Baptist Church of Ruston what was taught and preached is what is taught every Sunday - the gospel of Christ. That is why the church exists - 2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

So is that a yes or no?

Did you read the link in the OP?

I just glanced at it. I am not impressed.

1. God's elect have been reconciled to God in Christ; thereby, being reconciled with each other.
2. The past that was written is the history that God had recorded in His Word.
3. Rejoice with others, yes. Has nothing to do with the worship of God during the worship service when Christ is to be magnified and God's elect rejoice in Him.
4. The Bible teaches about God's elect having been freed from sin in Christ. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 7:21, if a person was a servant when God regenerated him and can be legally freed from it, then fine, but if not, don't worry about it as he is free in Christ.
5. God's elect are to share the gospel with everyone, free or slave, in any and all economic, or political, or social conditions.

Good grief....does EVERY thread have to turn into a "God's elect" thread? We've got a forum for that! Holy Cow!~

You might want to do some research and see how many times "elect" is used in the Bible.

So, yes, I will mention God's elect as God mentions His elect throughout His Word.

4 times in the OT & 13 in the NT

54 times we will see the word Hell

and love is used 280 time

and saved is used 104 times

and 550 times we see Heaven

So what I am trying to say is that instead of concentrating our preaching on Hell - lets preach on Gods love, being saved, and on Heaven!!!

Wait - is that what we were talking about?

YES ! , ...that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

PS - AVL - yep, I double checked- this is NOT the C vs A thread!
My fault as I did not put a disclaimer.

What a comforting doctrine it is to know that God chose a people before the foundation of the world, gave them to His Son to be their Surety, and that Christ has fulfilled all of the conditions for their salvation from sin so that the Holy Spirit can regenerate them into life in the Son. Not one of them will be fail to be brought into the new heavens and earth wherein dwells righteousness.

I know that a lot(most?) of people who call themselves "Christians" rail against the pure gospel of Christ, salvation by the sovereign, free grace of God. They insist that they must be at least somewhat in control of whether they "allow" God to save them.

I love what God had the writer of Psalm 118 to say in that wonderful chapter of God's Word toward the end in summing up that particular Psalm:

"This is the LORD's doing; It is marvellous in our eyes." - Psalm 118:23

Hey, if anyone wants to fill their pulpit with talk about a man-made holiday, go ahead. Just don't expect me to sit there and listen to it. I spent decades listening to non-gospel teaching and preaching. I will not do so any longer.

Our pastor's message on Sunday was about biblical fatherhood, using Joseph (Matt 1:18-25) as one example. I don't recall any mentions of Juneteenth.
(My wife and I do celebrate June 19 - it's our anniversary. :D)

My family doesn't celebrate it and I don't think any Christians should. In announcements at my Church it was mentioned in passing by one of our elders as "The day the colored folk got their freedom", but it's much more than that. The four reasons below are why Christians need not support it.

1. The War Between the States was an egregious wound upon this country caused by an overzealous and extremist abolition movement in the North that believed the Bible allowed them to kill slaveowners. The Bible is clear that slavery is not a sin and as uncomfortable as that makes many lukewarm Christians immersed in the culture nowadays, the Lord gave direct instructions for slaveowners and slaves to behave admirably. Neither set of instructions involves the slaveowner getting killed.

2. If Christians today agree that we shouldn't start shooting abortion doctors to save babies, then likewise it is not OK to shoot slaveholders for owning slaves. This is especially true when killing babies IS a sin and having slaves is NOT a sin.

3. The majority of people killed in the conflict were not slave owners and the radical Abolitionists by their actions were willing to kill yeoman farmers in order to free slaves. That is evil.

4. The imposition and creation of this holiday is tainted with cultural marxism a la the BLM variety of which I will lend no credence. This holiday will be used to push for reparations, mark my words.

The article claims it will lead to racial reconciliation and we can use it to learn from history. Not true. The way the holiday is phrased is a total rewrite of history. And the article's author seemingly supports the false claim that all slaves were treated badly. He's clearly in no position to write about history when he is so ignorant of history itself.

Feel free to...I just know that some people want to shove their Calvinistic leanings on everybody else by inserting it in every conversation. We DO have a forum for that kind of thing; Some don't want to hear it all the time.

I am quite aware that LOTS of people don't want to hear the gospel of Christ.

As God says(to put as we might do today) in His Word - "How dare you!"

Jeremiah 18:5-6 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD.

Romans 9:19-21 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
