The Christian doctrine of 'just war', which goes back to the time of St. Augustine and has served as a guide to the church during the centuries since that time, agrees with you on this issue.

To listen to some Christians one would be lead to believe that "blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God" is a quaint notion hatched by naive liberals who don't have a clue about the real world.

Yes, that's precisely the "THEY" that I refer to. But since the arguments against the war put forward by that "roughly 57% have prevailed, I expect that even many who previously supported the war will now come aboard.

I also suspect that several polititions will flip flop. They have the benifit of being Monday morning QB. The question is would they have done the same thing as the POTUS if they were in his shoes at the time of the decitions.

LETS SEE IF THEY WOULD HAVE.

It goes on and on. The difference between those above and POTUS is that they have the option of changing their mind. The POTUS decition is final and he is responsable. The question is why when all those above thought there were WMDs Bush should have known better.

Whether or not this President, former Presidents, or anyone else sincerely believed Saddam had WMD's is not the issue. Rather, the issue is whether war was the only option available to address the issue. Those of us who opposed the war believed then, and believe now, that the President did indeed have other options open to him which he refused to consider. War should ALWAYS be a measure of last resort. And those who rush to war before all other avenues have been exhaused are in my opinion little better than the extremists we oppose since both show how little they value human lives.

Those who took an objective view of this war didn't want for us to invade Iraq in the beginning because the president couldn't state a good reason for starting it.

They authorized WAR, but they did not DECLARE war (which is what is mandated by the US Constitution). And yes, they knew what they were doing - and probably not just a few of them (on both sides of the aisle) had something to gain (personally) in their portfolios, i.e., shares in defense contractors, oil, etc. Money rules. That's what all these politicians are about, not about what is right for this nation or the Constitution.

I think a lot of it was political cowardice. Because of the hysteria of the time, many were afraid to appear weak on defense.

Others were positioning themselves for the 2004 elections.
