I am partly going on media reports myself, as I don't attend any grounds regularly other than Crewe; but I'm also going on what I've been told and what I've read about different grounds.
A lot of people who attend top grounds like Anfield and Old Trafford are not actually from the home area of their club. I have read that 36% of an average Liverpool crowd live more than 50 miles from the stadium. Football has become more fashionable since Sky started covering it in 1992, and hence it has become more middle-class. It tends to be the Scousers or Mancunians that cause trouble at their games, as opposed to the out-of-towners.
