LE,

I am glad that is the case with you. I am also glad that the dark days of segregation are mostly over in America and behind us. I am confused, however, why you used that as an example. Was it just a poor choice for an example. If so, I certainly understand. I make faulty comparisons examples all the time. Usually when I am very tired.

Merry Christmas!

So you are grateful to have the opportunity to discredit MLK because he partially plagarised his disertation, and he was not totally honest about his real name (never heard that one). But so what?

Does any of this make his sermon to the nation in August of 1963(I Have A Dream) any less prophetic?
Does any of this make his Letters From A Bimingham Jail to the White Clergy of that racist city anything less than the truth they needed to hear? Does any of this make his basic message that black people are just as much created in the image of God as any white person less true?

MLK did not need to be sin free in order for his basic message to be something any real disciple of Jesus would embrace. I will gladly celebrate his birthday, for he has helped us all realise what it is to be truly American, believing in freedom for all.

If you have a problem with his personal life so be it, but his public life is what impacted the country in a very positive way. And if you can't see that then God help your racist soul.

"Kwanzaa was created in 1966 <...> as a holiday to help blacks get in touch with their African roots."
"
How can a holiday created in America in 1966 help one get in touch with centuries old cultural roots on another continent? It truly would have made more sense to say, start celebarating a holiday that originated on the westcoast of Africa.

King has (for better or worse) reached a point where he is more of a symbol/icon instead of a man. Unless you can provide a very good alternative for the symbol, it has become unwise to try to demolish the man, because then you attack the cause he symbolized as well.

Yeah, but, to quote the tailor talking to the nudist, "so what"? Thanksgiving is a man-made holiday. So is Labor Day. So is New Year's Day. So is Mother's Day and Father's Day. If someone wants to do the Kwanza thing, hey, no problem, let 'em. If they don't that's fine with me, too. Same with all the other man-made holidays.

Now Guy Fawkes Day is a REAL holiday! Anybody trying to blow up the government is a friend to all.

Like I said, if folks want to celebrate their ethnic heritage, go for it. I've never been to Ireland and Scotland, but still celebrate.
