Legalism or Liberty in the IFB Church?

There is no church that I agree with perfectly so I have to choose the best of the bunch in my area. I do not agree with their requirement that members 100% abstain from alcohol as this is not a Biblical position.

But if its a deal breaker I will do so.

6 years ago I was at BJU and there they frowned upon beards and having facial hair. They said that Biblical Christians did not have beards. They have since changed their view, but its amazing what they thought then.

Also 6 years ago BJU and many IFB Churches said that having a Facebook account was not for mature believers. They have changed since then..

Then before that BJU and some IFB Churches said that interracial marriage was a sin and those marrying someone of another race was not Biblical. They have changed their position…

Again there are no perfect churches but one must look to the Bible for their authority and not tradition.

Yeah. Somebody told me once, "if you find the perfect church, don't join it. If you do, it won't be perfect any more."

So far in this thread and elsewhere you have said in order to join this church you would:

1. Get re-baptized
2. Drop your conviction that drinking alcohol is not a sin.
3. Accept their "Arminian" approach to soul winning.
4. (Apparently) drop your use of WOTM soul winning.

But you would NOT accept KJVO.

You have also said you might discover other teachings you object to. So what's the rush to join this church?

reminds me of when i was in pentacostal church, as an Elder, that people would take me to task for taking kids to Movies to watch Disney film, as that was evil, and also took another Elder to rtask for stepping outside to take a smoke, yet gossip and critical spirits must have been OK to them!

Yes you are right indeed right. I need to be patient and just attend for the moment.

You need to do some open air preaching against that church. Please learn the Way of the Master method and get some confidence and do some open air preaching. I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me says Paul.

Help me out here, brother.

Obviously, that church you attend (but won't join) has some things that you like.

What are the things you don't like (or disagree with) that keep you from joining?

What are the things you like that keeps you attending?

Since you're still going there, what are the positives which tilt you in that direction?

What things would you consider tests of fellowship?

Great idea.

bad idea. you should join a good church, not just attend. And not just attend one that you disagree with. You should not go to that church. You have stated quite a few big issues you would have to compromise on. Go to another church. I'm sure you should be able to find one without having to compromise on big issues. Sure, you won't agree on everything, but the list(especially the unbilbical re-baptising) is a major one.

I would also say that you and your fiancé need to sit down and talk about it. You should tell her that you will not compromise on your believes and join that church. You should only change your beliefs if they disagree with the Bible. NEVER change just to join a church. You would be joining on a lie since you don't really believe what they believe.

And even more important, you need to make sure you and your fiance are on the same page.

We are on the same page. We are in a small town and do not want a commute. I will give her church more time to make a decision. I am not sure if there are any Way of the Master friendly churches in the area as not all the 9 Marks Churches are WOTM friendly as amazing some are into friendship evangelism which makes no sense to me!
