I'd ask you to show me that quote. Swindoll takes no such position, to my knowledge.I'd give you quotes from my copy of the book, but it's either shipped to America or I threw it away, I disremember which. But my memory says that someplace in the book Swindoll opposed any kind of Christian rules.
Swindoll and his wife Cynthia "tithe in reverse" -- they live on 10%, give 90%. Would you fault them for the 10% being so great? They give much of that to the EFCA missions board. At least two of his sons and their wives serve on the missions field in Asia and Africa.Regardless, I don't have much respect for the man. He's living in a mansion from his royalties while missionaries all over the world struggle to survive. My grandfather wrote over 200 books, including several best sellers of 100-500,000 copes. But he used every penny of the profits for God's work, and lived in a modest 3 bedroom house. He gave away 1000s of books to college students, gave away 100s of 1000s of dollars to missions (once gave $1000 to my work), had millions of his tracts printed in many languages at his own expense.
Their so-called "mansion" is no more house than the kind I build in the southern KC metro. "Mansion" is not a fair word to use. Yeah, they're big houses. Lots of people in my church live in such houses. So what? Would you have them live in poverty to "prove" their humility?
Sorry, John, I have a great deal of respect for you and your ministry, but if you don't really know what Swindoll teaches -- and it is apparent you don't -- not commenting would be a better option.
