I thought that the mission of the American Red Cross was to help people in times of disaster. I have a problem with what I saw happening in Jena , La. yesterday. My problem is not with the people coming to Jena to march, they have that right, but with the American Red Cross giving away supplies to the marchers. The newspapers have stated that approximately 25, 000 bottles of water were given out. I will not mention any medical care that was provided, but we do have a local hospital that offers excellent medical care, but not for free. I sat on the balcony of my office and watched the marchers arriving carrying no supplies, but when they left Jena they were carrying bottl es of water that was supplied by your organization. These people were not in a disaster mode, they knew what they were getting into when they came to rally, and should have planned better and brought their own supplies. I had a house burn in 1985 and lost everything, including my cars and dog, but never got a call or note from the Red Cross. I did not mind that I was not contacted by you and have not ever given it a second thought until yesterday. I have donated faithfully to the Red Cross for the better part of my 56 years, but no more. I know that in the scheme of things I am just a small drop in the bucket, but I will tell everyone that I know what has happened here, and maybe this small drop will turn into a flood.

My sentiments exactly!!!

As well as The United Way, and /or United Fund!Don't remember which, as my experience goes back to ~'63.

I think one of these is extinct now, but don't know which.

Their explanation sounds pretty reasonable. I'm in the medical field and prevention is always better and cheaper than treatment.

It also sounds like they will be trying to get re-imbursed by the state.

Are you still going to support them?

I don't care what the reason for the protest was, these tactics seldom work. The Red Cross spending what little money it cost to supply water to a few protesters doesn't see all that important also.

My uncle (now deceased) worked hard for the Red Cross for many years, and then not long before retirement age, was put out the door (for no good reason). This happened to others as well.

Don't you all recall the huge debacle/scandal with the Red Cross and 9/11? That was enough of them for me.

I don't think the Red Cross should be providing supplies in areas of a non-disaster, but to suggest that due to such they should therefore act in the stead of personal home insurance is ridiculous.

I cant speak for the OP, but I assume he was not asking for the Red Cross to rebuild his home, rather, put him up in a hotel for a few nights, help buy some clothes, ect until he got back on his feet.

Regardless, the Red Cross is an organization that provides social assistance, not individual.

The RC has often helped in situations such as that for individuals.

When I was a one-striper back in 1971, the Red Cross loaned us food money because my paycheck was fouled up in the (brand new) computer pay system. That $35 was welcome and well-used!

The Red Cross as well as the Army Emergency Fund has helped many a soldiers in (real ) need. Unfortunately, there are always some who abuse the system.

Yeah, my wife's housing allotment was more than my paycheck. We lived in an apartment in Biloxi that had a bed that folded up into the wall, with a two-burner stove, a mini-fridge, and a two seater table. The bathroom was bigger than the kitchen .

Young, newly-wed, crazy in love, and broke--what a great time it was. For the record, we are still newly-wed and crazy in love, AND broke--helping the kids, you know--but we ain't young!

I purchase water for 14 cents a bottle at Sam's Club. I believe that 25,000 bottles at that price comes to $3,500. Of course the Red Cross could get water cheaper than this I would suspect.
