LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty University, considered the world’s largest Christian university, has hired an open homosexual advocate to choreograph its upcoming Broadway-style presentation of Mary Poppins.

The university recently published an article regarding the production, which it celebrates as being the school’s “largest to date.” The article notes that Alluvion Stage Company, an arm of the university’s Department of Theater Arts, “has hired a guest music director, a flighta flight director, and a Broadway choreographer” to assist with the presentation.

“We are very excited to have all of these guest artists join us … They bring a whole new level of excellence,” stated artistic director Linda Nell Cooper. “Our goal with Alluvion is for every show to raise the bar somehow; they have helped us to do that.”

The selected choreographer is Geoffrey Goldberg, a New York City-based artist who has been involved with professional theater for over a decade, and traveled the country for five years assisting with the production of Mary Poppins, among others...

...Director Linda Nell Cooper told Christian News Network that Alluvian/Liberty University was not aware of Goldberg’s beliefs about homosexuality, but stated that one’s “personal life” is not a factor in the hiringhiring process.

“He was hired based on his professionalism and his talent like everyone else,” Cooper explained. “It never came up in the conversation, nor would it have. … We do not ask about their personal life.”

“We work under professional guidelines. No one knows anything about anyone’s personal lives,” she reiterated.

This kind of thing can hurt alumni. If they are looking for positions in churches and our churches know about things like this it will reflect on them.

Good grief people. What if LU hired a Democrat... you guys gonna get nervous in the service about that too!!! I bet this helps the schools reputation. But leave it to the right-wing brand of American evangelicalism to screw this up as well.

Yup.

I doubt it has an effect one way or another.

To be fair, the left wing of American evangelism does a good job of screwing things up too, watering down the gospel, etc. The Goldberg hiring, however, unlike what some think, doesn't have anything to do with "watering down" the gospel and everything to do with successful outreach.

You're probably right about the effect. The world really isn't watching LU constantly. Why the conservative, evangelical world is somewhat baffles me.

Things are getting worrisome at Liberty.

They just announced a major partnership with Benny Hinn and are awarding degrees through his ministry now.

We need to pray for Liberty. The almighty dollar is more important than the Almighty God with the administration these days.

As an alum I am not happy with the way things are going.

I am concerned about both as are a great many people. And we should be. This will have negative effects to both current students and alumni.

If Goldberg were teaching a class on hermeneutics, theology or marriage and family counseling, I'd be concerned. He's not. He's bringing secular expertise to the production of a secular theater standard.

On the other hand, Hinn is a heretic, and Liberty is giving degrees based on experience and training in his ministry?

Let's see ...

No debate. Hands down, I'll be concerned about Hinn and let Goldberg his thing, as long as he stays out of the School of Theology.

Liberty & Benny

Liberty University released the following statement on Thursday, April 3:

Liberty University is not partnering with Benny Hinn. Liberty transferred the operations of Liberty Home Bible Institute, a non-accredited biblical studies certificate program, to Mr. Dan Reber a number of years ago. It is our understanding that LHBI’s new operators are working with Benny Hinn but LHBI is no longer operated by Liberty University. Mr. Reber was granted certain licensing rights to use Liberty’s name because the Liberty name was deeply imbedded in LHBI course materials. He was also required to obtain permission from Liberty University for any changes in marketing of the courses and Liberty University is investigating to determine whether this new marketing approach violates the terms of its agreement with Mr. Reber.

Nope not teaching theology. Still a big problem. Shouldn't be there at all teaching or influencing anyone for any reason at a Christian college.. The fact that liberty would let them in the door shows there is a big problem somewhere.

When alumni from that school show liberty on their resumes to prospective churches who know about this kind of thing they will place their resume in the round file.
