Licking-Locust Association

Does anyone have information on the "Baptized Licking-Locust Association, Friends of Humanity?" I ran across a reference in McBeth — which noted that Lincoln's father was a member of one of the association's church, though he was never a member but "sometimes swept out the meeting house ... "

I have looked at Benedict's history of Kentucky Baptists and The History of the Negro Church, but have found only snippets.

Not sure I would like to admit I belonged to the Baptized Licking-Locust Association. Where do they get these names?

Jim, the association was named for Locust Creek and Licking River in the region. Still wouldn't want to be tagged with the name, no matter how geographically defensible.

I was disappointed to see my home town didn't make the list. It's at least as good as Bushyhead.

Bushyhead, OK, BTW, is named for early Baptist missionaries in the Indian Nations.

As it happens, I have heard about Hell, Michigan. I believe it is on the north penninsula.

I saw a program on the telly one night all about the place.

I wouldn't mind being the pastor of any Baptist Church these days, even in Hell.....

Well, you know the Hell I mean....I should expect they would anticipate fiery sermons, which would be quite difficult for an English gentleman.

I've read where Baptized Licking-Locust Association, Friends of Humanity broke off of Bracken Association in KY around 1807. It seems that several United Baptist associations were into becoming emancipated associations. There were several in IL, for example.

I'm not sure about Thomas Lincoln being a member, but I know that in "W.T. Stott's Indiana Baptist History: 1798 - 1908", it states that Thomas attended a church in the "Little Pigeon Association of United Baptists of America".

"Thomas Lincoln, father of Abraham Lincoln, made the window and door casings, the pulpit, etc. Abraham himself did some of the work on the building, and often went to church there" (Second Pigeon Church).

And that:

Among the members was Adam Shoemaker from whom, it is said, Lincoln got his first notions of emancipation.

Just thought it was interesting.

There is also a (an?) Hell in Norway - you can buy postcards of the station platform in winter with the caption "Hell does freeze over".

But that is nothing compared to the plight of the poor villagers of Rattery in Devon or, worse still, Sh*tter in Dorset
