Rush Limbaugh says “African-English” actor Idris Elba can’t be James Bond

Rush Limbaugh is a Good Old Boy™*. It is known. He has carved out quite the niche for himself over the years by appealing to like-minded people who long for the halcyon “Mad Men” days of America.

But this guy…this guy.

On December 23, Rush Limbaugh decided it was time to take on the injustice that is Sony floating the idea of Idris Elba as James Bond. If you’re so inclined, you can listen to the whole thing over here on Media Matters. Limbaugh declared that of course Elba can’t be 007 because “James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish, period. That is who James Bond is.”

Despite then acknowledging that Bond is a fictional character, Limbaugh wrapped himself in the armor of admitting “I know it’s racist to even point this out” and plowed headlong into a feat of flawed logic so gigantic, you can see it from space.

The talk show host doubled down with, “Fifty years of white Bond because Bond is white. Always Scottish. Always drank vodka.”

...
Then things take a turn for the bizarre. Channeling Jigsaw, Limbaugh says “Let’s play a game," before ruminating that Jay-Z’s favorite drink must be Cristal. This is all in lead-up to the following. Brace yourselves.

“How about in the movie about the Obamas, George Clooney plays Obama and Kate Hudson plays Michelle? How would that be? […] Kelsey Grammar as Nelson Mandela. […] Who will we get to play Al Sharpton? Rod Reiner. Colonel Colin Powell? How about George C. Scott? I know he’s dead, but what does that matter […] Condoleezza Rice? Scarlett Johansson. […] Michael Sam? How about Hugh Grant?”

Once finished, Limbaugh tries super hard to inoculate himself against criticism by admitting all his suggestions are real people and James Bond isn’t. Sadly, it’s not very effective.

Look here, racist old white dude. You can’t say Idris Elba doesn't get to be a fictional character because it’s not fair unless white people get to erase black people from history by playing them in movie biopics. That is the logic of a crazy person. I refer you all ONCE MORE to this amazing visual aid on why casting minorities as traditionally white fictional characters is a good thing, but the reverse is not.

Idris Elba is a great actor. He was rumored to be on the short list to be the new Dr. Who when Matt Smith left last year. He would have been a great Doctor Who. The hot rumor is that when Peter Capaldi regenerates into the new Doctor in some future episode the new Doctor will be a woman. That wouldn't bother me either.

However, a black person playing James Bond? As a Bond fan (all the movies, most of the books including post Ian Fleming books), I just can't see it. Mind, I would still go and see the movie....but, it just doesn't sit right. It is established that Bond is the son of a Scottish man and a Swiss woman. His father was a WWI veteran and then became a sales rep for a munitions manufacturer. The idea that Bond's parents were black just is not in the history of the franchise. Leave it alone.

Rush is an entertaining idiot. I quit listening to him at least 10 years ago. His schtik is tiresome.

I read a fan fiction story that I think would have made a good Bond plot. The current Bond (be it Craig or whoever plays Bond next) is visited by a previous Bond, like Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan, and told that the name James Bond and the Agent number, 007, are all codenames, instead of real names. And now, thanks to some policy change within the intelligence division, the Bond lineage is being eliminated. The movie would show Roger Moore being assassinated, along with the other Bonds, except Sean Connery. A plot like that would allow for a great actor like Elba to be Bond.

Since we are changing him - does James Bond have to be man - no matter his ethnicity?

This is 2014!! .... why can't the character be Jayne Bond. I suggest a hip and cool Sandra Bullock surrounding by half-clad Bond Boys who provide nothing to the story to except for ogling.

Now THERE'S a movie!!!

(Scarlett is now ducking for cover!)

That's actually not a bad idea. He can claim that he is Elba's father by way of Trina Park's character from Diamonds are Forever.

That's been a theory for a while, that James Bond is a cover term in the movies. But, unfortunately, Skyfall ruined that since it went to Bond's old stomping grounds and Craig as Bond is clearly the son that grew up there and he actually is James Bond.

Yes, I have heard of that concept. However, what do you do with his parents, Andrew and Monique Bond? They are mentioned in several of the books. Also, I just watched Skyfall last week and he visits their grave sites in the movie. Kind of a problem for the fanfic story.

Yes. (I must have been typing my post, above, as you were posting this.)

As long as we are discussing Bond, the budget for the new Bond movie, Spectre, is reportedly the biggest movie budget ever. Hackers in the Sony hack case have obtained the screenplay. And the Bond 'girl' is a 50 year old actress, the oldest in franchise history.

Yep. I'm hoping it pulls it all off. It could be one of, if not THE, biggest movies ever.

Was anyone else really excited when the poster was unveiled? I was. :D

No worries.

Yeah. The cover term theory really only goes with the movies. Besides, how many of your average movie goers even know the movies are based (sometimes VERY loosely) on books?

I thought Daniel Craig was a great James Bond.

Anyways, Bond is a Scottish secret agent. I've never been to Scotland but I'm willing to bet there are black folks there.

The problem is that James Bond's parents were middle-upper class Brits. His dad was an arms dealer. His mother's maiden name was Monique Delacroix. That background, while not impossible for a black Scotsman in the 1920's, is extremely unlikely.

I guess my previous attempt at sarcastic humor fell flat.

I don't think her age is going to matter to anyone who enjoys those films. Have you seen her? She is drop-dead gorgeous. She's the woman who played Mary Magdalene in the Passion of the Christ. She's not afraid of nude scenes in her films and with this being a Bond film, she'll shed some clothes and hop in his bed.

But then again, that's what Bond girls do.

I think I'll leave here and go back to the women wearing head coverings to show their submission thread. :flower: :tongue3:
