Since we are changing him - does James Bond have to be man - no matter his ethnicity?

This is 2014!! .... why can't the character be Jayne Bond. I suggest a hip and cool Sandra Bullock surrounding by half-clad Bond Boys who provide nothing to the story to except for ogling.

Now THERE'S a movie!!!

(Scarlett is now ducking for cover!)

How about Beyonce Knowles surrounded by half clad cross dressers carrying golden Illuminati symbols?

Madonna could play the role of "M" and hang her own Illuminati symbols on the office walls.

I wouldn't know anything about Beyoncé or her dancers. I never seen her show as gyrating half clad females do not do anything for me. And I was not a Madonna fan.

I'm sorry everyone. My sensitivity and snarkiness got the better of me in this thread.

I would appreciate the moderators to remove all of my posts in this thread as they do not contribute to the OP.

Idris Elba is a great actor. He was rumored to be on the short list to be the new Dr. Who when Matt Smith left last year. He would have been a great Doctor Who. The hot rumor is that when Peter Capaldi regenerates into the new Doctor in some future episode the new Doctor will be a woman. That wouldn't bother me either.

However, a black person playing James Bond? As a Bond fan (all the movies, most of the books including post Ian Fleming books), I just can't see it. Mind, I would still go and see the movie....but, it just doesn't sit right. It is established that Bond is the son of a Scottish man and a Swiss woman. His father was a WWI veteran and then became a sales rep for a munitions manufacturer. The idea that Bond's parents were black just is not in the history of the franchise. Leave it alone.

Rush is an entertaining idiot. I quit listening to him at least 10 years ago. His schtik is tiresome.

If James Bond is a fictional character that shape shifts - re-incarnates as a different person every so often - alien from some other planet - fine anyone can play that part. Man, Woman, Child

I have to agree with you! I just can't envision a black man playing the part of Bond, anymore than I can see a white man playing the part of the old Shaft character.

As far as going to see a Bond film with a black actor .... I would have to pass! I think if they do this, the man will stick around and be less popular than Timothy Dalton in the role of Bond!

You're correct about his perents, ITL, and the writers would have to really rewrite the heck out of the script to make this even remotely seem possible!

Note to Hollywood .... leave Bond white!

One of Rush's biggest issues is being able to properly articulate genuinely importsnt sentiments. Usually this is because he's a blowhard and bloviating buffoon. This issue is a good example.

Our whole society has shifted towards a position that the authorial intent is subordinate to cultural whims. Jackson's mishandling of the Hobbit is a key example but also what had happened with comic book characters. This is the larger issue.

Now, if Ian Flemming's people allow an African American Bond that's fine. I probably won't see it. I believe in Flemming's vision for Bond and that it shouldn't be subservient to the whims of cultural critique. Just my 2¢.

Rush can't state things elaquantly because he isn't an elaquant person.

You are right. Rush is one of those guys that you might meet at a tailgate party. I could see him enjoying ribs smothered in rib sauce, giving out his opinion to anyone who listens!

Still, he has made it from the loudmouth next dor, to a nationally known and oft respected media personality! and I'll be honest, I like listening to him! I guess that makes me a tailgater?

I don't see a problem with Idris playing the role.

Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra and she looks nothing near Egyptian.

Warren Oland ( a white man) played Charlie Chan in several films.

Laurence Olivier ( a white man) played Othello.

Alicia Nash ( Hispanic) was played by a white female in A Beautiful Mind.

In the film "Pay It Forward", Kevin Spacey’s character, teacher Eugene Simonet, was originally supposed to be a black man named Reuben St. Clair.

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games

Remember the racist backlash over the casting of a young African-American actress as Rue in the 2012 blockbuster hit The Hunger Games? The indignation was high, even though Rue is described as having “dark brown skin and eyes” in the book on which the film was based.

It is interesting to note that there was no outrage that the character Katniss Everdeen, widely regarded as a woman of color by many readers of the book, was played by naturally blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jennifer Lawrence in the film.

Author Suzanne Collins describes Everdeen in the book as having straight black hair, olive skin and grey eyes.

So more power to Idris if they cast him. I think he'd make a wonderful Bond and would still go see the movie.
