Do most beieve that faith is a gift from God, or something inherit within us, that we chose to exercise?

Most, if not all Calvinists believe presalvation faith is a gift of God instilled by irresistible grace, but that of course has been shown to be a mistaken view. It is God who credits our presalvation faith, as worthless as a filthy rag, as righteousness, so the "gift" is turning our sows ear faith into a silk purse. No Calvinist believes that biblical truth, however. :)

That is quite untrue. Augustine was the first great theologian of the post Apostolic Church. To deny that is absurd. Of course he was also a master of philosophy.
Augustine was the first to deviate from scripture on almost every major point of doctrine because he was a thinker instead of a student of scripture.

Calvin can't rightly be considered a philosopher as such --however,he drew on Augustine's biblical wealth of knowledge.
Calvin let Augustine think for him much of the time. And Augustine had no such "biblical wealth of knowledge". Both should have been scourged for leading countless sheeple into major error.

Charles Hodge and Jonathan Edwards were honorable theologians, but also delved into philosophy too much for my taste. Gordon H.Clark was a noted Christian philosopher --but at the same time considered to be an erudite theologian.
I confess that I am not as familiar as others are with the works of these men.

"On almost every major point of doctrine" ? So please inform us how he was "off" on grace for starters.

You are incredibly uninformed.

Yep,you know next to nothing of the works of Augustine, Calvin, Edwards and Charles Hodge. But you still want to pontificate about how wrong they were! What gall you have.
