Looting begins in New Orleans

I wonder if all the Guardsmen are armed and what their "rules of engagement" might be?
I'm afraid that if I were one of the guardsmen on this assignment, and my superiors did not see fit to allow me arms AND ammunition, I'd have to be court-marshalled for failure to obey a direct order!

As to "rules of engagement", they ought to be "shoot to kill" any looter if ONE (1) warning did not send him fleeing for his life sans his loot!

Maybe even then just a "warning" arm or leg shot to convince him to get out of Dodge & don't come back!

As I understand the latest, most of the Guardsmen will be MPs. Fort Benning has been put on alert to dispatch Active Duty MPs. Ft Hood has trrops on the move.

The USAF has opened up at least one of NO Int's runways. They have also set up an evac hospital at the Airport.

What I have found strange is the absence of Keesler AFB in any of the reports. Keesler is/was a major training base in Boloxi. From what I can see from the maps, the base took a direct hit.

Does anybody here have better info on Keesler?

I am bothered with the looting of homes, stepping over bodies to ravage someones belongings. Let's bag them and tag them. We'll work out the details later.
Gib,

Why does the looting of homes bother you more than stores. Most people have homeonwerns insurance, so there losses will be covered just like the stores.

Someone else made a good point about it causing prices to go up for everyone. Insurance will cover the cost, then insurance premiums will go up, then business owners will pass that cost on to the final consumer.

Looting is wrong no matter if it is a business or home being looted. Those doing it are stealing.

The business owners should be distributing food, clothing and whatever else people need, but if they choose not to people should not steal it. Looters are theives.

Actually, let me correct you here a little, if you don't mind.

New Orleans, not the greater metropolitan area, but the city itself, is somewhere around 70% black and 30% white. Of course subtract a point or two in each category for the small amount of "other".

Someone may have some extremely precise percentages, but that's about it as far a racial makeup is concerned according to my knowledge.

The words "Cajun" and "Creole" do not signify race. The are adopted words that describe culture and lifestyles.

And do not intermingle the two words. People from New Orleans have a distinct difference between the two.

True Cajuns (Acadians) are descendents of French people who fled Nova Scotia in the late 18th century. They were escaping British rule and they went to their French relatives in New Orleans. There aren't many of these descendants left and anyway...it's awfully hard to prove.

Today the word "Cajun" refers to types of music, cooking, speech dialect, and way of life. You don't have to be a descendent of the French Acadians to live like a Cajun.

True Creoles are a little harder to pinpoint. Different groups of people claim to be geniune Creoles. And again, it doesn't refer to one's race. It refers to a culture and way of life. Early in New Orleans history, you had MANY, MANY bi-racial people there. Well, 200 or more years ago, the white would not accept them and neither would the blacks.

Take these bi-racial people and have them intermarry the early French citizens and the early Spanish citizens and you get "Creole".

You won't find people who claim Creole as their race today, but they do claim it as their culture.

Even if they do have French, Spanish, African, and even more on their early family trees, by this time they each claimed a particular race or call themselves bi-racial or "other".

They don't call themselves "Creole" by race. And to look at a person who claim the Creole culture, you would say, "Oh, he's black" or "Oh, she's Spanish" or...you get the picture.

In fact, my Louisiana ancestors are both French and Spanish. We know who they were and when they came here.

However, I look white. That's because these early ancestors married white people.

I do not call myself a Creole, even though I have the racial heritage in my ancestors, because Creole is not a race. I also do not call myself Creole because I have not adopted the culture.

My people tend to call themselves red-necks. (Groan!!) And that is another Louisiana culture all unto itself!!!!! Ha!

Just a little history lesson.

Scarlett thanks for that. Hey nothin' wrong with red-necks!

I wonder why there isn't some command center set up somewhere for the police? Or is there? They need some strong leadership and should have had it days ago. It doesn't look like anyone is in charge.

A friend told me that things would be much better and less chaotic with more help by now in N.O., if the community were well-to-do whites instead of mostly poor and black. I wonder if that's the case.

I saw some video from Keesler. It looked almost wiped out, but it also looked like they might be trying to open a runway.

I lived 12 miles from the Los Angeles Riots. The looting and destruction saddened me. I know this is different in that the hurricane destruction couldn't be controlled. I don't believe in stealing--but I've never been starving or looking for drinkable water. But like someone else mentioned they are stealing stuff like tv's, etc--and shooting at those trying to help!

In Los Angeles, I saw people destroying their own neighborhoods--firsthand--and then expecting the gov't and churches to help rebuild them--and they did. I attended one of the churches that got food, diapers and other stuff together. Then they sent a team to clean up the mess.

I'm all for my tax money going to help these folks. But they don't need to bite the hand that's trying to help them by shooting at them.

I pray for peace--and rescue workers.

Folks, driving in this morning I heard a report on the communications infrastructure. The short short of it is for the last three days it's as if it all was scraped down to the bare earth.

Cell phone towers are out. The only reliable communication is via satellite phones and the military nets. This status will improve as diesel arrives for the various generators. And as fresh batteries arrive for the various radios used by the responders.

"The words "Cajun" and "Creole" do not signify race."

Neither does "black."

"The are adopted words that describe culture and lifestyles."

So does "black." It now designates a "trash" culture and lifestyle.

This is the latest on NG deployment:
National Guardsmen Pour Into Louisiana
By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer
NEW ORLEANS - Thousands of National Guardsmen with food, water and weapons streamed into Louisiana on Friday to bring relief to New Orleans' suffering multitudes and put down the looting and violence. "The cavalry is and will continue to arrive," said one general. SNIP

This is a bad testimony for us. These criminals should be dealt with by any means necessary. Any person firing a weapon at a relief worker or National Guard member should be shot on sight. These criminals trying to hijack New Orleans only understand force. Its shameful how a few criminals want to get in the way of helping people in need.

The sad fact is that “if” one of these criminals is black and the criminal is shot then the Rev (term used loosely) Jesse Jackson will cry the cry of racism. I’ve seen this happen in my area when a criminal drug dealer tried to run over a cop and he was shot. The Rev. Jackson overlooked the fact this man tried to kill a cop and tried to make a race issue out of it.

I don’t fault people wanting food and drink but beer, shoes, TV’s, etc…! The National Guard should be the ones taking food and drink from the stores and giving it to the people.

Our people need to do what is right and not worry about what the media thinks and cowing down to criminals breaking the law.

Let us pray for the safety of these people since certain criminals are already raping etc… These people need protection and prayers. I hope our military quickly sets up law and order!

From what I've seen over these past few days, a four day reponse in force is not all that outrageous.</font>
  • As noted above, the land and cell CommNet was flattened. Batteries and diesel generators began to die on the second day. How can you coordinate with out communications?</font>
  • Bridges and highways were/are impassible. How can you get folks and stuff from point a to point e if the road links are cut. With the recedeing of the water, road travel is getting better.</font>
  • The list can go on but you get the idea. In this age of the instantaneous, we expect things to be solved a minute ago.</font>

David,

A member of the Black Caucus is already saying that this is racism due to the lack of help NO is getting. I saw it on the news this morning. I don't know if it was Live or said earlier.

However, it seems that they have just moved some of the problem from NO to TX. I heard a man that was moved to the Astrodome complaining about the conditions there not being good enough and that someone stole his clothes.

After they evacuate the people from the Superdome in NO, they ought to put anyone involved in any type of criminal activity in there. I heard that the conditions are horrendous and that is what they deserve.

I am truly shocked at the level these criminals have sunk. I would have never imagined something like this. I posted somewhere that when I lived in Sicily, some of the Italian women thought American women were like those in the soap operas. I just hope that those in foreign countries witnessing the barbarian acts in NO do not think that is what most Americans are like in a desperate situation.

They probably will be.

I think beer and shoes are understandable (no running water and poisonous snakes, broken glass, steel shards, etc.), but not TVs and vaccuum cleaners.

The National Guard should be the ones taking food and drink from the stores and giving it to the people.
But they weren't. And I'm not so sure the the NG should be looting stores.

Are looters any worse than gas-gougers?
