If a woman desires to look more attractive and goes out and purchases make up, is she coveting?

    Is coveting simply wanting something?

If you are not single you are about to be.

I think what comes across in certain posts(even though I doubt they mean it this way [IMG] ) is that any spending on anything they deem to be a non-essential is a waste of money and is a sin(or at least close to it as being bad stewardship).

    Here's a question:

Why would anyone see it as fun wasting hundreds of dollars (which many do) just to get the high of gambling? IT is an addiction like has been said, and is any addicition healthy, or honoring to God?

With the interest on this thread, I watched a lady buying some lottery tickets,,,,they were a pull tab where one must match three symbols. The maximum prize is $200.00 and I think there were four of those in the whole drum. She spent $65.00 and stood there pulling these little tabs to win,,,,,,,,,,,,nothing!

    Cheers,

    Jim

Which, very sadly, how it is with most people who play the lottery!

We have missed the REAL PROBLEM with Gambling (lottery, bingo, craps, blackjack, pull-tabs et al).

Gambling is unbelievably addictive. It is NOT just a harmless way to "blow" a few "entertainment" dollars in your budget (like going to a movie or buying a slurpee).

South Dakota instituted gambling a few years ago while Wyoming opted not to. $$ raised from it to pay for medical and school, etc.

Well, the Wyoming legislature checked about it ten years later. South Dakota is now paying MORE to deal with the gambling addiction, derelect families, welfare all related to gambling than they make in all the "profits". If they had it to do over, they would NEVER allow it.

And while we're being honest, WHO is running this gambling? Indian tribes, with members looking for big profits and no work.

LOOK at what "gaming industry" is doing to the American Indian. Tragic.

    End of sermon.

Dr Bob: "LOOK at what "gaming industry" is doing to the American Indian. Tragic."

    That is terrible.
    I live in Oklahoma, with
    more Indians than any state.
And the gambling is ruining them.

Some people with Aisian names were arrested
for running a gambling place for the
Apaches. They gave the Apaches the land,
the Apaches added it to their reservation,
the Aisians ran the place and gave the
Apaches some money from time to time.
    The state broke it up.

I used to be in "gaming" it was the
    playing (before computer) complex games
of war. The computer age made the war games
less complex to play for the compter did
all the hard caluclations. But then
the gamblers stole the word "gaming"
from us. They had a perfectly good word
"gambling" but had to steal our word also.
(don't get me started about how the
liberal press of the new world order stole
    "fundamentalist" [IMG] )

Anyway, each dollar you spend on gambling
is about 60¢ for organized crime and
3¢ for some governments. Not worth throwing
your money away for promoting illegal
drugs, prostitution, and other dark sides
    of humanity.

  10. Are you saying that state organized lotto gives 60 cents on the dollar to organized crime? This doesn't add up to the calcuations that i have seen. Could you verify it please? Thanks!

    ABG said:

    Lets define coveting

Okay, let's. Coveting is wanting something that belongs to someone else, or to wish for something enviously. Are you not desiring a sum of money that belongs to some else?

The Bible says "thou shalt not covet."

If a woman desires to look more attractive and goes out and purchases make up, is she coveting?

Absolutely not! She is exchanging her money for a certain return of goods - just like groceries.

    Is coveting simply wanting something?

No. Again, it's wanting something that belongs to someone else. [IMG]

Bro. Adam: "Are you saying that state organized lotto gives 60 cents on the dollar to organized crime?"

I said: "each dollar you spend on gambling
is about 60¢ for organized crime and
    3¢ for some governments."

I did not mention state organized lotto.
My state of Oklahoma is free from state organized
lotto. People are trying to get such in OKlahoma.
They keep trying until it happens.
When the gamblers got horse racing legal
in Oklahoma, the state got 6%. But then
it didn't raise much money so they cut the
    state's take to 3%.

So my figure of 60% is an educated guess.
But i suspect i'm not far off.

In Oklahoma it was made legal to have bingo
games, if the money went to charity
    (i.e. non-profit making organizations).
Someone would set up a place to play bingo
(i.e. gamble). The gamblers would "represent"
several dozen charities. The charities would
get maybe 1 or 2% of the "take".

Gambling is an evil world run by organized
crime. It would probably be more efficient for
the state and raise money if they would
hire some thugs to rob little old ladies.

We need gambling amongst us like a fish
    needs a bicycle [IMG]

My thoughts are the same as they would be on gambling.... here a buck, there a buck, probably okay, especially if it's money that's come out of your entertainment budget. But if it's money that's coming out of your grocery budget, or bills, then there's a problem.

I've got to disagree with you on this.

Buying a lotto ticket is not coveting someone else's property. Once a dollar is spent on a ticket, that dollar no longer belongs to that individual. It belongs to the state who wants to and is willing to give it away. Let's face it, you and everyone else do in fact want millions of dollars...If I showed up at your house with several million, would you turn it down? Of course not...Everybody wants a million dollars, and its ok to want something.

If that want turns into greed, jealosy, coveting, or an idol for you, then its wrong.

Ummm....actually, no....I would not want millions of dollars...

Now, i bet you think that I'm lying, but I'm not...You see, I don't want millions of dollars because along with that comes you taking your friends for granted and losingthem because of it.

Not only that...but it becomes harder to teel who are and who aren't your friends...So many people will come to you acting as your friend so that they can get money.

I would rather live in a one room shack than live in luxurious mansion...I'd be more content, and more reliable on God...The way it's supposed to be!

ABG - You admitted in your statement that the money "belonged" to the state - so it belongs to a something rather than a somebody. You are desirous of something that does not belong to you.

What is your definition of coveting?

Does your church sell lottery tickets?

    If not, why not?

Please don't try to make everything that isn't specifically addressed in the Bible okay. I never have found Marlboros addressed in the Bible but they were killing me and by the grace of God I quit using them. Never read about heroine in there either but God gave us some smarts - everything cannot possibly be addressed in the Bible. I gave you the definition of coveting right out of the dictionary. Do you disagree with the dictionary? ;)

Oh yeah - I forgot. If you came to my house with a million dollars to give me? I'd take it but if I had to pay you for a chance on it, I wouldn't. :D

1 Corinthians 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Are you referring to church carnivals, etc? Yes, we have a 50/50 drawing at the annual church carnival. In California, btw, the lottery is pretty much a 50/50 drawing. The winner gets half, and the public school system gets the other half.

Question - If an action is not necessarily wise, does that make it a sin?

Absolutely not. It isn't wise to go outside for a stroll in a blizzard in your bathing suit, but it is not a sin. Your point?
