Man Carries LOADED AR-15 Rifle Through World's Busiest Airport

Here’s what happens when a white guy with an assault rifle gets combative with airport security

shutterstock_234649834-620x412.jpg

Last week, a white man named Jim Cooley visited the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with an AR-15 rifle strapped to his back. That white man became angry because he was unfairly stopped and questioned by law enforcement authorities while he walked around that international airport.

It was his right under Georgia’s open-carry law to visibly display his weapon, he correctly argued, and he should not have been detained even one time.

A local NBC affiliate reports:

Cooley says he was approached by several Atlanta Police officers asking about his firearm, which he said he was carrying for safety, while at the airport

However, Cooley asked the officers, each time he was stopped if he was being detained. When the officers each answered in the negative, he continued on his way.

In a series of videos posted to his YouTube page, Cooley can be heard rudely stating his rights to an Atlanta fire marshal who is politely asking him about his firearm.

Let’s all take a minute to imagine how these interactions might have gone if Cooley wasn’t white. Is that too hard to imagine? Okay, fine, imagine he wasn’t in an airport. And instead of a real gun, imagine he was holding a toy gun. Too hard? Then, let’s just imagine he was waiting to pick up his kid without a gun and not in an airport.

Man Decides World's Busiest Airport Is A Good Place To Openly Carry A Loaded AR-15

A Georgia man openly carried a fully loaded AR-15 semiautomatic rifle into Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest in the world.

Jim Cooley was armed with the weapon -- complete with an extended capacity 100-round drum -- when he went to drop his daughter off for a flight last Friday. Following the enactment of new state legislation in 2014, it's actually legal to carry a rifle in the open in the airport, so long as the holder doesn't attempt to pass through airport security.

Multiple police officers approached Cooley while he was in the airport and asked about the weapon, after which he replied he was carrying it for safety. Officers can be heard talking with Cooley in videos of the interactions he later uploaded to YouTube...

This is just STUPID. I'm all for folks exercising their rights. But this right here is just STUPID.

Why don't we just call the terrorists and say "Hey, it's okay for you to walk through the world's busiest airport with an assault rifle or apparently any other type of gun and the police aren't gonna attempt to stop you."

He's carrying his gun for safety and probably just made the airport a whole lot more unsafe for the millions upon millions who use that airport yearly.

Flag on the play. Five yard penalty. Didn't assess 10 yards because yes, it was stupid.

BUT....

The police DID stop him and talk to him.

Made it more unsafe? No one got shot. No shooting occurred. Since the police stopped him, there's no indication that the airport was any less safe.

Penalty is for knee-jerk reaction and histrionics. Resume play.

He was carrying the weapon to make a point. Silly way to do it in my opinion, but even the cops got the point. It was legal and he couldn't be arrested. Civil rights are not suspended at the airport gates.

Now, another question is, were the cops guilty of that dirty word "profiling"? After all, the weapon was on his back, not in his hands. ????

Most open carry advocates are white folks who never served a day in the military.

Frankly, they couldn't hack it in the military. But they sure love carrying their modified assault rifles around in public. Its ridiculous. Just another way of playing a very dangerous form of dress up.

Most open carry laws include a provision that if a business or public venue doesn't want people carrying around weapons they can just post a sign noting that at entrances.

Just to add, this guy is looking for a fight. Pretty sad too. Wearing a camera to record interactions with law enforcement. This isn't the way to advocate for your cause.

Would like to see evidence of that.

We're calling an Officials timeout to review the flag.
.
.
.
After review the officials flag is overturned. The airport has been made more unsafe by opening the door for anyone(terrorist or otherwise) who wants to shoot up the airport to freely walk into the airport with a weapon to do so.

If I were a terrorist and wanted to scare the Americans, Hartsfield Atlanta, the world's busiest airport, is where I would now start.t You could legitimately come in equipped to kill hundreds of people and probably not really get questioned according to this.

And if you are questioned, all you have to do is lie. Or do we really think an ISIS operative couldn't get the right "paperwork" to be able to convince the cops they can carry these guns? But according to this guy, they didn't even have the right to question him.

I fly in and out of Hartsfield Atlanta all the time. You can't sit still for 30 seconds in front of the drop-off area without the cops accosting you. But parade through the airport with a loaded rifle and they just leave you alone???

If he were Black, he'd be in jail or dead.

So we're just supposed to assume that every cop everywhere, regardless of race or experience, is just roaming the streets, or the airport, in a foaming-at-the-mouth frenzy looking for a black man or black child to shoot?

I'm sorry you've had those experiences. I've been through Hartsfield many times. Never had a single issue with the police there.

Assumptions. You don't know that for sure. In my experiences at Hartsfield, the majority of cops I've seen there are black. Do you think black cops are shooting black men without discretion; simply to be killing black men?

I heard a number of military guys on the talk show circuit saying something similar this morning. That it's kinda like Viagra. Makes them feel more like men to let folks see them carrying these types of weapons in public because they either washed out of the military or got put out or couldn't get in or were really afraid to serve.

And a lot of them do seem to be white.

Most open carry laws include a provision that if a business or public venue doesn't want people carrying around weapons they can just post a sign noting that at entrances.

The crazy thing about this again is that police killed a 12 year old child in 2 seconds upon seeing him with a toy gun, and killed a guy in WalMart, where they sell real guns, yet this guy demonstrates that you can apparently parade around with guns and not be questioned.

You apparently can bring your mind together to surmise that they aren't so why not the opposite?

And when unarmed black men are being killed just for "supposedly" reaching for a weapon, it does seem rather odd how few of these white men who have actually killed with weapons or who parade around with loaded guns seem to not get shot or killed.

Correct. I should say he would PROBABLY be dead or in jail.

In my experiences there, it always seems to be pretty balanced inside and out. I think there are enough cops who have been conditioned to think a certain way that a white cop would have probably done the shooting and the black and white cops would help him justify it.

Idiotic assumption by someone with a huge log on their shoulder.

For Zaac and all the like-minded, I propose that since things are seemingly so bad in this country for him and his, we offer a one way trip to their choice of destination in Africa.

Undoubtedly they will then be content, since they can most likely manage to get away from ALL whites and the perceived racism thereof.

Think this might allow Zaac et al be at peace with the world????? ;) :D

Christ-like....

Man, stop playing the hypocrite. If you don't have anything to say to the one who attempted to insult me, then don't hypocritically say anything to me.

And it is pretty dumb of him to think that he can insult me with an Africa joke.
