'My life goal is to assassinate Trump': Ohio man is first to be charged for sending threatening election night tweet

A 24-year-old man from Ohio has been charged in a federal court after tweeting a threat to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump on election night.

Zachary Benson, from Fairview Park in Cleveland, posted the remark on Twitter a few minutes before the Republican nominee was declared the winner of last week's election.

Benson tweeted: 'My life goal is to assassinate Trump. Don't care if I serve infinite sentences. That man deserves to decease (sic) existing.

As far as I'm concerned, the worst thing that can happen is that someone makes a serious attempt on the life of President-elect Trump. His ideas and administration need to stand or fall on their own rather than leave his followers and the nation cheated by an assassin. We are going to have to learn some hard lessons as a nation to move past this time since I don't think Trump has the temperament, character, knowledge, ability, humility, or perspective to lead the free world in a positive way.

Very close to what I used to say about Obama - please please please he needs to live and if he dies of a natural death or murder, he will be made into a martyr.

This Zachary Benson person should have known better, people go out of their way to monitor FB. I think he overreacted and has already been set straight.

Being at work I don't have the time to look up and ready the Constitution. Does it have a provision for the prez- elect about died before taking office? I have a gut feel that's going to happen.

I pray it doesn't happen. I think we will simply have a President Pence.

Amendment XX, Section 3:
If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President. If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.

I suppose being dead is 'failing to qualify.' But a conflict may arise if the president elect is killed before he is officially elected by the Electoral College. Has he been elected or not? If not, why is he even called the president elect before the EC elects him? And then-- ooh, what would the electors committed to Trump do if Trump is dead before Dec. 19? As far as I know, they are not committed to voting for his running mate, and, of course, they cannot be legally forced to vote in any way. That's interesting-- and will be more so if my gut feel actually comes to fruition.

I know you are exploring an academic question, but this sentence makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Let us all ask the Lord to protect Mr. Trump (and our nation) from this kind of chaos and death.

Maybe, but we dodged a bullet with Hillary as her meltdown response to her loss of the election shows for sure she does not have any of those things.
