EW&F, in many respects ironically Britain is less divided now than it was in the 1970s and 1980s; it is far less class-riven now than it was then and the North-South divide is not as bad as it was. We have in exchange a milder version of your conservative-v-progressive culture wars but are more united as a nation - witness the Olympics and Jubilee celebrations last year.

All of that said, I've been utterly sickened by some of the scenes I've witnessed this week, with street parties (mini-riots in reality) to 'celebrate' and people buying copies of Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead; you can disagree with the policies whilst respecting the person, especially when she's scarcely cold. A very bad case of playing the woman not the ball. At times like this, I wish we had a thirty-day flag rule like you do in the US

Yes, the same Baptist pastor told me about the song and the celebration parties. I agree, it is way over the top.

It is OK to disagree with a person's policies. It is, IMHO, all right to have parties and sing songs celebrating that death.

Rev. I seriously doubt the coal miners are liberal. But she put them out of work.

You conservatives complain bitterly about the EPA coming down on coal mining. Well she went far beyond anything the EPA has recommended.

Face it, she was a conservative in a class of her own who in the long run alienated almost everyone. You remember when talking about Scotland she made a statement, saying, "There is no such thing as society."

And she didn't alienate everyone: there were many who did very well out of her rule; she rescued the country from near-bankruptcy, broke the power of the union oligarchs who'd held the country to ransom in the 1970s, and won the Falklands War against the odds.
